Hi folks,

Thought I'd post a short snap shot of the current project. Still a long way to go, but it'll be done right. Watch this space for a chronological refurb!!

So far this week, full brake strip down + rebuild with all new components. New rear springs and dampers. Both seats recovered. All scabs ground off.

Hi Ian,

No plans to sell this one for a while....been on the lookout for a pickup for a bit. Not too worried if its suffers a scratch or 2, so hoping to try a bit more off-roading with her. As for engine, standard 300GD 5 pot.

Fred

Hi Fred, keeping it the same colour - black Rhino load area. Hope early January - but i doubt it will be as bespoke as yours when finally finished!!

Cheers

Hi Ian + Hus,

Fixwin has succeeded in taking me out of it, I see his point. The pickup/Soft top is factory - in that it was supplied as a 2 seater with a canvas roof. I'll be enclosing the cab + fitting a rear window. As for Bill...wouldn't have thought so....1st few months of life in England...then sold to a farmer here until I bought it in the summer.

Cheers

Company that manufactures these bespoke conversions is called:

LeTech
special purpose vehicles

The owner is a certain: Andreas Lennartz who, if I'm not mistaken was/is a technical director of ORC + an accomplished Dakar racer.

Amazing what a "Facebook" search can turn up!!

Chance would be a fine thing.... Got her home Saturday....not the auspicious occasion I had planned!! :(

Masses of work left for me to do - no rear window, Steering damper, drop links and entire interior left in a cardboard box!! Add to that a host of electrical work and many many more issues....not looking good for its' MOT next week.

Guy ran out of Time, Patience and money...

On a positive note - I've been known to tackle the odd job or 2 on G's...so time to roll up the sleeves and do what I probably should have done myself in the 1st place!!

Much more satisfying to DIY Marty. The steering damper's easy if that's any consolation! Good luck. Tom

What a difference a week can make!!

peter perfect wrote:

Finger well and truly out Pete!!

Feel like I've just come up for air!! A week above and below a G!!

Still...I hope you think it looks like it was worth the effort!!:

Whole interior re-installed, to include seat belts, interior trim, dashboard, glovebox, install new stereo and hard-wire Sat Nav mounting. Fan switch repair and general cleanup.

Exterior/underneath: Get all the lights to work...sounds simple? Not so!!. Steering damper, roll bar drop links, grease all CV joints, windscreen washers, install back window, paint cargo area, mount spare wheel carrier lock....

All in all a fairly major list...lets hope the MOT man appreciates my efforts tomorrow morning!!

Cheers

Re: New Winter/Spring project. SWB Pickup

A week too late for Wicklow...but finally through MOT!! :D

Inspector didn't feel the love and set me back £500 to sort out what I thought were a few petty items... namely + most costly "Too much play" in front drive shaft Hardy Spicer!! Git. New one fitted.

Couple of underbody holes ....not structural or even close...but like I said he didn't feel the love!! Welded.

Brake balance % difference rear. Adjusted.

Too much play in rear wheel bearings....New ones (££ Ouch!!). p.s. Have a spare new one in Kit form, direct from Mercedes, if anyone wants it.

Ah well, new ticket for 1st time in 5 years...got to be a good thing.

Cheers

Thanks Leo + Tom.

Couple more cosmetic tweaks....

Got the underneath Waxoyl sealed. Fitted new chrome cover to spare wheel (Fred Cutler...good job). Teak around the load bay. Fitted original lamps to brushguard + re-fitted sump guard.

Gotta love these late nights!!

Just need to fit some rear mudguards:

Going to resite the Fog-light to original. Thought spare wheel was going to foul it more.

Re: New Winter/Spring project. SWB Pickup

Thanks to the generosity of Andreas Lennartz I now have my fuel can carrier that I hope to fit.

Small problem, it appears too wide...i.e. projects past bodywork on nearside. Anyone have adirect on rear picture to clarify?

Maybe can only be fitted on Wheelarch equipped model?

Any suggestions as always, gratefully received.

Re: New Winter/Spring project. SWB Pickup

Hi Marty from your pics it appears that your spare wheel carrier is mounted to latch more to the centre of the tailgate than standard... would this be the reason for the can carrier not fitting within the body profile???I understand that you wanted to leave the filler cap accessible without unlatching the spare wheel every time to fill the tank ...but that could be your problem.....

Re: New Winter/Spring project. SWB Pickup

Fraid not Peter.

Fuel carrier is affixed to n/s quarter panel + sufficiently off to one side to allow drop hatch to operate. So located it is so wide it projects past bodywork on N/S.

Martin

Are you missing the offside rear reflector or is it lost to the spare wheel carrier? Car looks great.

I may have a new one somewhere if you need it.

As for the wheels - yes big ones will look good.

Am indeed John...noticed after I sold my last pair on Ebay for 99p!! Typical!! :D. The spare wheel cradle was mislocated...so is in the place for the reflector. 1 of the few things the MOT man didn't pull me for!!
