My question is for my MOT to pass i have been told i must get british g wagen head lamps by guess who, 'mercedes dealer'. Surely i can just get little cone shapped skickers for it to pass.
Last years MOT was carried out down south so shouldnt have to do anything to lights.
Any advice write me cheers Andy

Re: MOT Questions

As far as I know stickers or skicker  are not allowed anymore to pass an MOT test. You have to have the actual lights for the UK roads, Its not just a UK think but a EU thing too, I have had the same here in france with UK vehicles, at one time stickers were allowed but they are cracking down on it now. What is meant by official MB ones is probably EU compatable recognisable by an (E) in a circle They are not expensive though from MB anyway I paid £90 for a pair of LHD ones from UK dealer before I moved to france.

Re: MOT Questions

Stickers are OK as far as the MOT is concerned, as long as the beam is blocked from spreading to the right. My G had it's MOT last December with stickers on the headlights.

But strictly speaking the car should have UK spec headlights to be registered here, at least thats the current regs.

It seems that this issue entirely depends on the goodwill of the guy running the MOT station.... the first year I passed the MOT on my older 300 GD with stickers but that was because the car still had Spanish numberplates and I was advised that as soon as it bore the UK ones it must have the RHD headlamps... and this was eight years ago!

Re: MOT Questions

stickers are not allowed. You will only get away with them if the person doing the MOT can't be bothered to make you change. The lights are cheap, use mk 1 golf. Even the new lights for the G500 are only 140 a set.

Re: MOT Questions

hi again though id keep you posted on Mot situation.
Just had a resit and it failed because the light sare definately european lights and not for the british roads.
Skickers from continent to britain also didnt work as far to severe an angle and couldnt get rise angle to fall in the 2 % catagory.
So what shall i do?
I want to either buy new merc head light for british roads part no im unsure about so if anyone knows please tell me with an option i beleive a darker lense?
Or go with what mervin is saying a get mark 1 golf lights hella i beleive also part no again unsure about so if anyone knows this id be appreciated.
Can i get from a local lucas dealer to speeden things up as im missing days of work now infact a week to date.
All info provided so much appreciated.
regards Andy

Re: MOT Questions

I tried the other routes partco hella and all it was as quick and as cheap to just go to MB and ask for them
I do have a spare set of 460 RHD lights as I changed mine to LHD but am in France and they will take a week plus getting to you but if you want them i will willingly send them.
Its the beam pattern thats important on the lense so no matter of tinkering will change the pattern It is sort of L shaped and faces the opposite way from european or UK depending on which one you already have. All the sticker does is to flattern the topper most part and bend it slightly so as not to blind on coming traffic.

Re: MOT Questions

I'm not 100% here, but i think if you go the Golf route you loose the headlight adjust feature.

I have the part number for the clear lens (UK) 463 820 01 59 around £60 from MB.

If you do order them from MB and part number 463 820 00 59 turns up, don't fit them, there the continental lights.

Re: MOT Questions

A Horn:

To summarize:

1) Yours is a 463 and has therefore the height adjustment feature. If you want to keep it, you must therefore buy the original MB part.

2) If you're not particularly interested in keeping the height adjust, your cheapest and easiest option is to go to any Hella distributor and get yourself a pair of VW Golf Mk I headlamps. They are exactly the same as those fitted to the 460 GWagen and will fit perfectly to your 463. Cost, some £ 26 each plus VAT.

3) Even cheaper is to go to a scrapyard and buy the pair of VW Golf Mk I headlamps. Cost, some £ 10 each.

Golf Mk II headlamps will not work because the metal holder is different, though the glass is exactly the same.

Cheers

Re: MOT Questions

thanks for all your advise but get this before i go and sort this issue out.
I have been sold an import from swizerland which received an mot in britain just before i purchased her from a garage, not private.
I would have thought fog light being on wrong side and headlights would have required change. So who is to blame - mot center for not picking up on it but they beg to differ after my conversation with them to day and was told the route lies most likely to the garage who sold it.
Mot center believe if anything they have fitted lights, british ones and turned them around afterwards and for some weird reason fog light was not noticed in test.
Im completely bafafled if thats how you spell it and want some sort of compensation for paying garage prices and having to contend with such crap 12 months down the line. Anyone have any ideas as to how to deal with it gladly get in touch.
Ive spoken with mot tested and says i should be at least entitled to returning head lights from my g to garage in reading and have britsh ones sent up to me free of charge.
Also mercedes are charging me £178 for 3 hours work to change 2 front bulbs and turn the rear fog light round to british spec so cable needed extended basicaly. im fumming and well efed off especially if mot had been carried out correctly or lights hadnt been swoped back to european standard all i would have had to pay is 45 pound
Hope to hear from you all Andy

Re: MOT Questions

You could always get said garage to do the MOT as they do provide that service... also the reason why it probably passed in the first place!

Re: MOT Questions

Andy, I had exactly the same problem when I bought my current GWagen in the UK. It is a LHD and it had the rear foglight in the wrong side as well as the said black stickers over the LHD headlamps, both with a valid UK MOT. The difference is that I bought my car privately (and for a very reasonable price) whereas you have paid good money to a "reknown" G-Wagen specialist and they should be made responsible for it.

Re: MOT Questions

The G lights can have the glass unit itself changed so you CAN fit golf units & retain the headlamp hieght adjustment if you so wish.
