Dates again please. We are going to book the time off work, and looking at buying a cheaper car, but no promises yet.
Thanks Chris. So far we are booked off for the first two weeks of August, and I would consider getting someone to drive my car down and we will fly. (Time is the biggest problem for us)
I know it is a bit cheeky, but how far are you with your cost calculations so far?
Anyone fancy driving down to Morocco in a G Wagen (with aircon)?
I am not sure I would leave any of them forum users driving my G wagen ....
I'm such a slow driver Fred, my car can do with a bit of hard driving.
If you guys plan to travel through Madrid drop me a line. We can organize something like in 2007
That was Howard's Van. Unfortunately, the current owner lacks the good taste that should be made mandatory for owning such a fine vehicle.
This is how it looked in Howard's hands:
In Rockingham's 2003 GWOA AGM:
and in its earlier life, being tested by Commercial Motor:
The G is still Howard's, having a bit of a mid lifer and has gone all bling. If you think the G is bad, wait till you see his new wellies. :-)
OMG!
Remind me never to even say Hi to Howard anymore!
A Midlifer should get a new girlfriend and FHBO rather than ruin a GWagen!
Not a bad idea, come think of it. My G has ice-cold aircon, BTW, just in case someone wants to join in!
Then I wouldn't be the only one wearing a jumper in August in Morocco. Come on, it's only a hop away for you. I'm 75% there.
And the only real off roader :-)
Cleared for take off. Let the planning begin.
Roadtesting of Big Green going well. New turbo and recond autobox plus lots more. Now thinking of fitting 240GD axles for the long haul.
Does anyone have a rooftent for sale at reasonable money? Awning?
Eddie.
Great news, we are at about 75% sure we are going. I know of a rooftent for sale, brand new, the guy broke his leg before he could use it first time, and now he can’t get up the ladder due to the injury. I’ll find out about the tent, and I can pick it up 8th of June. I am pretty sure it is a Hanibal 1.4m tent.
Christo. Put my name on it if the price is right. I would get Wonderman-with-van Kevin to pick it up so I could get some practise in. An awning would be nice too. And a fridge. And more cupholders.
I'm loving big green more and more
:-))))))))))

Eddie we have done a lot of this sort of thing, so before you start spending we need to have a chat first. The worst thing you can doe is take to much "stuff".
I am good friends with an importer of best quality camping and expedition gear, so I will be able to get you good prices, but we can chat nest week. This week I am camping in the rain!
LOL. :-)
Sorry Eddie, tent gone, £400 bargain
Thanks Christo, pity I missed it, that was a bargain.
Don't worry about me bringing too much gear. I presume a tent is required, awning would a nice bonus, fridge even more so (inverter already fitted for the kids laptops lasy year). After that some basic tools and one or two spares. A glow plug relay is always worth having in the glovebox. Maybe a filter set.
Switch to 240GD axles is not going to happen as my donor car is LHD :-( Does anyone have a RHD 240GD front axle for sale?
Most important question is are we allowed to stock up on wine/beer on the way down or is it Verboten to bring in to Morocco?
Eddie.
I'm having trouble to get the time off, so it seems I'm going to have to miss this one.
is it just the 3 of us?
I am still planning to go but subject to two variables at the moment. Firstly funds, selling my W100 600 and W109 6.3, some interest but no firm deals yet. Secondly my oil pump (the cardiac version) is acting up again and I'm back under the knife tomorrow :-(
Hope to have better news in a week or so. Replacing both front CV joints in anticipation. I have route planning done to arrive in Algeciras July 22nd but nothing booked yet. Do you think we will get as far as Merzouga? I've seen some fab pictures, looks gorgeous.
Eddie.
ps How do I get automatic notifications of replies to this thread?
Outlook improving. Strong interest in my 600 and 6.3. Hope to conclude deal(s) in the next week or two.
Oil pump given the all clear too :-)
Hi, did you end up going?

I am a fan of NFU but just let me find out for sure how much the Moroccans really charge for temporary insurance. I know it's expensive over there for locals to insure - almost £1,000 for an old banger.
Apparently SAGA (over50s) get a green card too (£10 admin fee)
This fellow doesn't have to pay;-)
edit.... The best I can find in recent reports is 60euro for 1 month. Some have paid over 100euro. I suppose there is nothing to stop you changing insurer, paying monthly and then changing back to a cheaper supplier after though I think NFU have always been competetive ish
