Neil

Going back to why you started this thread, that throttle linkage could easily be behind all your performance / gear change problems. Before you empty your wallet much further, sit a family member with their foot firmly on the throttle (or a broom handle works for me!) and check whether the final operating lever  - at the very end of the linkage about 3" long, just behind the distributor -  can be pushed any further to the right against its return spring or whether it is against the stop. As suggested previously  I bet you are / were getting less than full throttle which would account for the early gear change / trouble with hills etc. The parts in the linkage that break (you've already found the main culprits) are plastic, not expensive, and easily changed yourself - if you don't mind a little grease!

Cheers Chris,

Yes buddy I do think you could right there. There is a lot of play in the connections and probably not offering the full throttle.

But as the thread goes on and also my investigations I can see that the vacuum pipes are also incorrect so possibly contributing to the poor old girls plight !

We'll make her well again !

Re: W460 / 280GE petrol auto, Performance figures ?

Just hit 85mph !!!

Yep that throttle linkage has a lot to answer for ! I only reseated the back part of the assembly (The big rubber ring at the back of the engine bay which holds a white plasti ring and ball socket assembly) it was pushed rearward and flopping about. Popped it back in and the difference was emmense !!!

I do also think she kicked down for the first time ever !!!

Don't get me wrong she ain't no rocket ship but that simple issue appears to be a big factor in the performance problems.

Sadly it has come unseated again so needs a proper and full repair but won't be long now before a full bill of health is issued !!!

Glad to hear it. Often the simplest most obvious solution is the right one.

Re: W460 / 280GE petrol auto, Performance figures ?

Cheers John !

Yep that's a nice bit of detective work and has helped immensely.

I have managed to obtain the first picture part number A1100720038 (throttle linkage bushing) from MB Tonbridge.

I will now call them in the morning to obtain the 2 off A1233010140 (spring retainer clips)

BUT !!!

The part shown as number 193 on the third screen shot is proving to be very very illusive !!! It is the throttle linkage holder which is attached to the back of the engine bay on the fire wall. MB part number :- A1233000040

I have ordered this part 4 times already and everytime i receive an out of stock email back and am currently awaiting 4 refunds from suppliers whom advertise the part but cannot supply !!!

MB tonbridge have said the part is showing as out of stock and on back order on their system but no clues as to when it might become available !

BUMMER DUDE !!!

Hi Neil

A123 300 00 40 is for LHD only 280GE's

You need A460 300 02 40 for a RHD 280GE

MBUK have 1 in Milton Keynes if you order quick tomorrow

Re: W460 / 280GE petrol auto, Performance figures ?

What lovely day for fixing your throttle linkage !

Oh absolutely yes you heard correct "fixing" !!! I have done it with my own fair hands having collected the rubber bushing rear holder piece and the clear rubbery plastic piece along with 2 spring retainer clips.

I cannot tell a lie it was a mission due to working within limited space and impeded access many times I walked away and sat in the garden with a cordial saying i can't get them little nuts back onto the bolts to hold the rear plate in position. BUT i actually sellotaped the split spring washer and nut to my finger and poked my finger in whislt trying to line it up with the bolt to which my screwdriver was attached ! EUREKA !!!

The rubbery clear plastic piece also needs be pushed through the metal part to seat correctly and this was a mission also. BUT i did it in the end and having just taken the boy for a rip up the bypass we hit 80 and we also have the kick down function back on the auto box !!!

Now onto the next jobs which have been mentioned.

Next friday the new plastic tank kit is being fitted (along with all new fuel lines and pump)

The medicine is working and the "G"Bola is losing the fight. Onwards and upwards !!! Keep on trucking !!!

Re: W460 / 280GE petrol auto, Performance figures ?

UPDATE !!!

Hello everyone,

It's been a while since I raised any serious questions or found any further serious issues. BUT behind the scenes I have been slowly beavering away at administering much needed medicine to my poorly truck. (she was diagnosed with early stage "G"Bola and some harsh critics even graded it as terminal and gave her not long to live)

For the harsh critics :- You was very very wrong and she is now super fit and healthy and enjoying a full and active life with her new family (she spends weekends with me and my little un embarking upon big fish capturing missions ! and has become irreplaceable)

For those that offered me much support and constructive information and solutions here is where we are today :-

The issue of no power and the autobox not kicking down is fully resolved. The lack of power was very simple and i replaced the throttle linkage assembly allby myself having sourced all the MB parts necessary. Upon completion of the throttle assembly the power came back she accelerates and pulls and she kicks down on the button ! Happy days.

The issue of a fuel leakage from he tank has rectified by the purchase and fitting of a complete plastic tank kit ! The old saddle tanks have been removed (they was rotten as a pear) and all fuel lines and new fuel pump have been replaced and are now brand new. Hasn't improved performance but she holds a full tank and will not truck on for miles. Drinking clean fuel is her pleasure !!! It also now looks all brand new and very very tidy indeed (a costly little exercise but she's worth every penny)

The issues with exhaust which if you recall she was wearing some naughty form of pipe which had been fashioned from a cornflake packet and many kitchen roll tubes has now been resolved by way of fitting a straight through powerflow SS system from manifold straight through up over new tank and exit from rear. This has improved performance no end (she sounds a bit naughty) as the previous shite was causing far to much back pressure and choking her poor little engine. This mod also looks the part.

I'm tell you another story of sheer incompetence and stupidity on my part here. When stood making admiring glances at my little truck the exhaust man said she's a tidy old wagon ain't she. Yep she is pretty and needs only a bit of fettling to make her perfect (dispite doubters saying otherwise) Gotta get this new pipe mate because she is dropping revs at tick over. does it behave as if firing on only five cylinders he said ? I dunno I said because i've never owned a vintage and don't really understand mechanics but it revs n' drops as if it'll cut out but never does. Pop the bonnet he said. We did and we stared. Hmmm brand new HT leads and distributor cap (alongside many many brand new parts) so won't be your plugs he said. No it's all new mate but hold on why does that cap at the back look higher ? as i touched it it fell off ! It was never connected properly !!! there ya go he said you're running on 5. whoa hold up buddy this at the back is not connected !!! Stuff a duck i'm running on 4 !!! They were all connected correctly and bugger me she is a different animal. amazing that she just kept trucking on 4 all this time. good girl !!!

A new stereo (with bluetoof for the dog n' bone is now fully fitted) speakers need be installed as the vintage blaupunkts are shot but i have those here in a box ready to offer up as a a gift very very soon. (electrician is gonna deal wiv dis any minute now)

Slight water ingress to passenger footwell. Adrian sourced new wiper spindles and these are fitted and she is dry !!! mind you we are currently experiencing mega heat so the test will come in september really.

With her now going bloody fast (90mph is easy) it was noticed that much vibration through the steering is apparent. Yep steering damper !!! so yep a new one needed. An MB 50mm upgraded one is on order with all nuts n' bolts from Inchcape and should arrive in a mo. obviously that'll go straight away and happy days are here again.

Obviously many other little bits n' bobs have been done along the way and the quest continues. BUT she is well guys and she is trucking BIG TIME !!!

Thank you all so very much for the support. (further updates to follow)

Hi John,

Neil kindly passed along the thread above to me as i am now in the same boat as he renovating a 1988 280GE auto 6 cylinder. The thread as been amazing help to me.

John the particular thread above with regards the "Throttle Linkage" what do you call the valve in picture "015.jpg" ?? and would you by any chance have a diagram handy how to put linkage back together as i've just purchassed parts??

John our thread has been invaluable to me..thx man tony

Re: W460 / 280GE petrol auto, Performance figures ?

Hi Tony,

John757 was inspirational in helping me but sadly he has parted company with community at present (personal reasons and I salute him and wish him all the very best)

We used to have another genius in our midst whom would of given you that part number in a heartbeat (sadly also unable to devote his time at present)

But there is always hope !

In order to progress you would benefit immensely from joining GWOA as a fully paid up member. This will give you access to the manuals within the members area and help you identify the part . Once identified there is yet another gent whom would help you obtain it direct from Graz factory if needs be.

All the best and welcome to our world,

Neil
