606 Jersey Super G
I just had a really cool ride home from work after being picked up by Tony Moons Super 606 Conversion whilst in Jersey.
The past three hours have been a pleasure and I can only say it's answers the reason as to why most of us love G Wagens.?
Power, Sophistication, Practicality and Kudos.....
Power - The power of Axels conversion was immense, every time Tony put his foot on the gas we were smiling with the sound of the 'Spitfire Roar' from the engine. The sheer torque at low speeds and keeping the revs down. The roar again when next to the boy racers in Jersey along the 'Golden Mile' to show them who was boss. There was a bit do rain on the roads but spinning those wheels in 3rd was impressive
Sophistication - Parking in St Brelades Bay next to the Lamborghini's et al to see their owners turn round and say what and earth is that thing that everybody is surrounding.....'I want one' they cried!
Practicality - two 50 or so old men (Tony and I) decide that at after a nice meal and two bottles of wine that the best thing to do a pull on those wet suits and do some kite surfing that we used to do 25 years ago.(see the pics).....again proof the Spider1V is not the only owner who gets eternal youth from their G Wagen.
And finally Kudos.......some 35 years after the first production the G still manages to put a smile of everyone's face with them thinking I want one....
Enjoy the pic's of a great converted G on the foreground of some great kite surfing.
Just hear those Tigers Roar.......Grrrrrrrrggghhhh!
Ps....I forgot how sore sand in your trunks was Tony :-)
Stunning.
Must have clicked through the photos 5 times over.
looks like you had a ball tim, you two poseurs cruising the jersey strip whatever next! there are very few g's on the island compared to the other 'exotica', funny thing is the swb 463 you were out playing in used to be tony m's everyday work horse towing trailers onto construction sites covered outside and in in mud /working for its living .
now its had a bit of paint /valet/ heart transplant/side steps and a custom side pipe and its taking the crowds away from the lambo's and bug's etc - nice .
nice pictures btw.
do you see what i mean about the factory sidesteps?? the set on tony's g were cut down from lwb ones that were accident damaged , they really transformed the look of the truck .
hah you'll be lucky !! i will ask my man to keep an eye open/ you can have the offcuts if that helps... (see pictures)
your m103 being replaced by the 662a should give some pretty good fuel range -but 600 miles hmmm you will be pushing it -literally
tim -tony m did ask me to do my worst on the engine so ... standard ish...
you will have to average 31.345678765 mpg / you will get a fairly easy 500 to the tank i would of thought but you will need to be pretty gentle on the old girl / if you leave the revs low and just steady away then yes /it will be good .
a jockey??? riding what exactly ..
what's the fuel mpg like at the moment with the m103 highish teens?
My question is that it has a standard Mercedes engine and why on earth didn't Mercedes do this as standard?
Don't even start that topic...can get very very depressing. Of lost chances and wasted opportunities...
But then, being less than perfect from the manufacturer ultimately makes them cheaper and it opens up an opportunity for others, which they have but to seize on. And well done to Axel, for example, for creating people's dreams and wish for's. And investment wise you're right as well. It's not even like the banks are giving you anything. Hell, it's not even safe with them! Might as well enjoy it. You only live once. And what you have here is just the perfect example of that.
Coming back to Axel, that's what England is famous for, isn't it? Little men (in corporate terms) turning out brilliant things in their little sheds. All I can say, well done to those doing it and well done those that support them! It is pure perfection not found anywhere else in the world in this form. This country is not so sh*t as what some may want to make out after all.
Pfffft!, you ain't driving properly unless you are down to 14 MPG. Throttles on the right.
31.57894736842105 projected MPG
That is totally not impossible. If I am assuming correctly that the 662 is an exact copy of the 602.980. Cruizing Europe in my old 312 Sprinter, I used to average 34mpg. Only thing I did was full open 2.5 inch exhaust from the turbo back, exit before driver's rear wheel, so no sharp bends, 3 inch freeflow muffler half-way. It was dead quiet, just occasional turbo whistle on overrun. Always Mobil 1 full synthetic. Keep the revs below 3k and max speed below 60mph and you'll get that mileage. Maybe not 34mpg, sprinter being more aerodynamic, but with road tyres and the above, you'll get close. The one thing that destroys the G's fuel consumption is speed/aerodynamics. Someone clever once worked it all out for brick shaped things. It was something like between 60 and 75mph, you use 30-40% more fuel. Can't remember exactly, but it was a lot. Hence why you'll often find me between the heavies on a long journey. OT that, you can get the 31.5789 in your G with Axel's work.
Axel, don't let me down
Mark,
Have you even been to Norfolk?
It's tractor heaven.....lots of red diesel though :-)
Yes many times, love it there.
Tim do you live near Alan Partridge ? can you get me his autograph?
marks big green 4x4 sprinter is really fast and his 14mpg is no lie if you give it some welly ,i took this picture during our workshop open weekend a few years ago .
Oooo, nice truck. Thanks Axel.
Hella's been replaced by LED light bar now.
Not going to miss an opportunity to post a pic, lol
Looks lovely!! I can't wait to get a 606 into my 460.
If I parked a defender on a beach like that... it would be corroding already!
Great thread Tim,
I think you have clocked up a few good visits since last year and seen some great G's! Looking forward to seeing you sometime soon!
Spider1V
is that where people have cone shaped heads and one eye in the centre..fen tigers overspill. !
I was lucky enough to have experienced the "jersey super g " first hand, and can vouch for the performance. ( It started with zero expectation from me)....think of a house traveling at 90mph on a motorway and howling like a banshee. It should`nt be possible to do, but the power Mike has conjured out of this G is shattering. He has turned out a 2.5 tonne sportscar. I returned home a believer....

Is it like this one?

or more like this one?
LMAO
thankyou sean! some of the reasons this 'g' performs so well are : for me to know and you to find out
just kidding / it has been put together very carefully and it has really been the culmination of all that i have learnt (so far) about preparing these engines /special pump builds from a proper bosch specialist / and the flow of a low restriction custom exhaust system/ and an efficient custom built one-off intercooler install.
the injector pump is very special... the engine produces superb torque and the engine is giving better fuel consumption than the n/a 603 ,when driven with restraint.
i am personally amazed that the crummy 463 standard 5 speed manual has stuck it to date /when it finally cries 'enough' it will be converted to a 6 speed manual clk cdi gearbox .
I'd be interested to know what the bhp is in these turbo'd up machines.
I know the Hughes turbo on a 300GE brings it up to a tad over the G's 5l V8

Must say the 'Agricultural' G's are slowly coming up to speed and having been out in a few of the 'spanked' up diesels over the years, they really do turn heads and with modern 'trickery' available are producing speeds and torque numbers previously unheard of.
Very nice.......very economical.......very sensible.........but.......sometimes.......just sometimes....one needs less 'agricultural' and more 'yeah baby, get out my way - I have a V8 and I am NOT afraid to use it!!! '.....

Nevertheless those 500's do sound great......but let me think...What did happen to the titanic
Will give you a call on Monday when I'm near you.
Regards
Tim
See - if it had a V8, it would have calved through the iceberg! I rest my case!
Spider1V
I have a V8 and I am NOT afraid to use it!!!
With you on that one, Spider.
I have cdi's and td's and V8's, not all in G's - am a poor peasant and refuse to pay more than 2k for a car (most were 500 a piece plus own time and effort).
In everyday life, needing to get around at a reasonable pace, (Mercedes) td's and cdi's are unbeatable.
But if I need a "fix", being rational, responsible, sensible, etc goes out the window and the V8 is the one that "gets it"
Mates are always asking "how can you afford to run that V8?"
And my answer is always the same - "£50 worth of juice in it gives me infinitely more satisfaction and fun than £50 down the pub (like they do)"
There is "something" about a V8 that just stirs the soul like nothing else can.
When it starts up, grown men of all kinds drop whatever they're doing, boys come running, women wonder what on earth?, the whole street becomes a crowd...
Spider, good on ye, never beaten. You`re a tonic for depression ......
They all sound the same under water.
G's being driven how they should be. :)

Was told by my old instructor adrenaline comes in two forms - solid (brown in colour) and liquid (yellow in colour)
So 'ewwwwwwww'

Now that's more like it!

Only way to solve this, is to put the two together:

Of course, it doesn't hurt to add more cylinders:

or how about this one:

Good to know that who originally built our cars also built these
EPIC!
Ok....I'll ask the question in another way. How does one of these Turbo'd oil burner perform in real worl compared to a stock G V8? I'm genuinely interested.
I might even be going for an FX50 as it looks to be the most accessable 4x4 with decent performance. RHD SWB G V8's (at a reasonable price) are few and far between
Mine does 0-60 in about 10.5 seconds and good for about 110 mph. Getting about 410 miles on a tank with normal driving

Is that a 606 T LWB?
1990 lwb 460 606 turbo, mechanical injection.
your more than welcome to come and have a drive

Might take you up on that. Ever tinkered with proper fuel Turbo's?
Can't talk for the modded ones but my factory 2000 G300td is slower then a V8, depending on driving situation MPG may be as little as 5% more to 15/20% more. Horses for courses.
Thanks mike.
Can you find me a set of those steps at the price your got those for?
I'm going to set you and Mr B a challenge..........?
LWB, 463, Auto......662 musso.....can you get me a conversion that will do 600 out of a tank?
Surf Boy.
