I'm running 2 x 300GD's.
VIN#'s
WDB 46033327026692
Axles
Front 730300 20 702433
Rear 741502 20 752433

WDB 46033327057917
Axles
Front 730300 20 H004544
Rear 741502 20 K004114

The diff ratios seem different, but can't find data to tell me for sure.
Can anyone shed some light on the ratios.

I stand to be corrected but I think that all W460 300 GDs came as standard with the axles you mention (front: 730300 and rear: 741502) and with the 4.88 diffs. As an option, they could be factory fitted with the 5.33 diffs. Looking at the datacard of both your vehicles, neither of them seems to be fitted with the optional diffs, which leads me to think that either they have indeed the same ratios or one of them has had its diffs changed during its life.

But like I said, I could be wrong.

Thanks Jesús,

I'll check the plates on the diffs, and get the tacho working right.
But seems to have lower ratios than any of my others, 3000rpm is 100klms.
One of my others runs at 3600rpm for 100klms, so I'll let you know once I feel comfortable about the tacho.
For a 300GD it runs very free, 110klms/hr with a reserve of speed, it's a seat of the pants feel, but I'm sure the diffs are lower ratio. (Japan Import)
It also has carpets and better insulation etc so it may be the lack of engine noise.
Will check it out fully, and let you know.

Auto or Manual?

Mal,

I can't remember whether the Japanese import is an Auto or Manual. If it is the Manual it will have the 5 speed overdrive gearbox which may account for the RPM difference with your other 300GD (if that one is an Auto or 4 speed). Just a thought.

Manual or Auto

John,
It's a 4 speed auto,(720.108) I'll do some more investigation today once the tacho is fixed.
It may have a 4.49 and not a 4.89 diff.

Fixed the tacho, needed a new impulse sender.(US $70)
The diffs appear to be standard, had it dyno tested and the standard 300GD (5cyl) non turbo is developing 115HP.(85kw)
That would explain the feeling of extra power, plus I'm running 31x10.5x15 tyres.
I can't explain the performance, fuel consumption is 6.8 km/ltr or about 19.2 m/gal.(City)
Emmissions are lean in the 17 range.
I'm happy, but don't understand the extra power on a stock standard motor, that has done 100,000klms and appears to be as it left the factory.
