Why, I hear you ask?
Well, three weeks ago I spotted a G-wagen for sale on ebay and put a bid in just on the offchance..... So I won it for very little money, then had to explain to 'her indoors' that we really needed a second G-wagen.
So I trundle down to Gatwick to pick up a 23 year old SWB 280GE, get it back to Yorkshire and feel quite pleased with myself.
To be on the safe side I took it down to Bill Moss in Daventry for a healthcheck, it has done only 70K but better safe then sorry. It almost got the all clear but Bill spotted a problem with the waterpump and radiator. He kindly offered to sort that out for me so I left the G there. Picked it up a few days later and immediately put it to the test at Daventry offroad site, when I say I, I mean Bill who showed me and the others how it should be done! Did I mention it is 23 years old????
Pottered back up to Yorkshire, gave it a days rest and then drove to Rochdale near Manchester for another day of playing, unfortunately got very very stuck whilst recovering a Suzuki. After two hours!! I was on the move again altough it took two winch equiped Landrovers anchored to 3 other Landrovers to get me out.
Difflocks are great things but they can get you into a whole lot of bother
After that I drove back home, jetwashed it and then loaded up and drove to the ferry as I was going on Holiday that day, crossed the North Sea, drove to my parents house in the East of Holland and have just got back to Yorkshire.
The G didn't miss a beat!! (with 20 crates of Belgian beers in the back  )
So, in 7 days it has been offroaded heavily twice and done a roundtrip of 1000 miles.
Not bad for an old car that cost less than a pair of ARB difflocker for landrovers.
Very pleased with it, just a shame about the fuelconsumption which is not just frightening, it is TERRIFYING!!!!!!
No rest for the beast though as it is going offroad for charity tomorrow in Sherwood Forest!
Only in a G...............

I MUST BE MAD!!!!

Nice one. As an avid off roader competing against landrovers that have cost in excess of £30,000 pounds it so please's me when I come 4th out of 30 entrants in a vehicle that cost me £1000. (not including winchs) slowly but surely landrovers owners in the off road scene are begining to realise there comments over the years against our beloved vehilces is becoming embarassing. Quietly some of them are admitting they might just purchase one.

But what is stopping them is there is next to nothing with regards to after market add ons for the G's. And when you have a toy there's nothing like spending more on it. With a G you simply dont have to. Lets face it, it took the military 30 years to realise the potential of the Pinzgauer. With the G wagen sadly it will be too late.

I MUST BE MAD!!!!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Took it offroading again today and...............broke it slightly!!!!
What made it even more of a bummer is that I had a car full of LR-fanatics and I was extolling the virtues of a G!!!!
Nothing serious thank God, that stupid tankprotector on the plastic tank sheared off.
It accumulates mud and then gets heavy and then brakes off!! It was like geology though, I found mud from Daventry, on top of that mud from Cowm quarry, on top of that mud from Sherwood forest!!
The tank itself stayed in situ, as did the tankstraps????
How the hell did I manage that!!
Apart from that it behaved impeccably, no leaks that I can see
Can I offroad it without the protector?? the fuelpump looks a bit vulnerable there.
Thanks

Richard

Tthe fuel pump is to be honest in the worst place it could be for lots of wading and playing in the mud. I would somther the contacts with vaseline as the rot sets in on the contacts and the plate over it holds in the mud. Not sure how you managed to break the tank straps but if you have the later plastic tank then this does sit a lot lower than the metal tank. Bite the bullit and buy the tank protecter from ORC on www.orc.de or get one made from thick ally plate if you intend to play serious.

BEWARE a G wagen will give you this sense of security that it will do anything. If you are new to this off roading do not show off or do anything that will jeopordise anyones safety. I rolled my g 3 times over down a steep hill wilst competing in a winch challenge. You would not believe the relatively minor damage it did. But if you want to impresse the LR boys practice on the quite to give you more confidence when showing off in public, that way they can't take the P!$$.

Well, that is the funny thing: I did NOT brake the straps????

And it was a very gentle day of offroading, I mean even a Freelander got round that course!!!!!! Just gentle trundled round, must have collected just a tad too much mud, oh well. Out with a big hammer and straighten the protector up again and slide it in between the tankstraps. Oh joy!
