since putting 235/85 16 s on my '82 300 gd,I find that the five cylinder diesels ability to move the lwb has gone from bad to very bad.Considering the options, the om617a,five cylinder turbo,is both hard to find (in Ireland),and hard on gearboxes, reputedly, even though mine is the 4 speed and supposed to be reasonably tough.Would the 6 cylinder om603 non turbo out of a w124 saloon make a good compromise.I think it should have either 113 or 125 bhp which is up a lot from the 88 of the 0m617.How hard a swap would it be ,and what gearbox would be suitable, manual or auto, for ease of transplant.I would love to hear, especially from those who have progressed from om617 to om603,(Jesus),about the effect of those extra bhp and whether even more power is needed.

Sorry to disappoint you Rob, but my upgrade from OM617 to OM603 hasn't been electrifying on the performance front. I have to say, though, that my newer G came with those same tyres that you mentioned (235/85R16) and that where my newer G excels is in smoothness and low range torque.

I know how it feels but if you really want acceleration you'll have to go for the OM617A.

what about hills

Jesus,
do you find that you have to drop down from top gear on hills or can the om603 keep up your speed all the way.Is yours a five speed and if so is, your top gear an overdrive gear as opposed to direct drive on the four speed that I have.

I have to drop down from top gear in exactly the same fashion that I had when I had the older 300 GD. Like I said, overall performance is very similar; if only higher top speed.

Engine choice

I have a 290 DT, 602 engine. I must say it goes like a train. It has covered 33K miles and is beginning to loosen up. At 50mph I can kick down and overtake without too much trouble.

I am considering taking the truck to Superchip whose workshops are in Buckingham only a few miles from home. They tell me the chip would make a great difference taking the bhp from 125 to 156 the same as a 270CDI.

Peter Perfect has details of a chap who is putting a 270CDI unit in to his G should be interesting to see?

Yes Howard a technicaly more advanced unit with some high quality electronics to fiddle with. You need a complete harness and UCU from the donor car and a friendly MB dealer to remap it for you.

Have you cured the stiff accelarator pedal or is that part of loosening up.
How does chipping affect insurance.?

The cast iron 607a engine is still known as the faith engine in Germany.

Hi Ho

Hello Bill

Yes, I agree a more modern unit. It does give me concern when I am off the beaten path. Older engines are well proven units but as they say you can’t have it all ways. If you want performance you need to get technical. Electronics are not as difficult to understand as say a couple of years ago. With a good laptop and software off the Internet you can sort most things. It wont be long before 290 lumps are put in G’s.

As for loosening up. No it’s not as tight as it was, and as for the accelerator its still not good and who ever designed the angle of the brake pedal should be shot.

Any chance of using you workshop to change my gearbox oil? I come past your place most Friday afternoons but you’re not in.

Workshop

You and I have the ability and I am sure some others but like you say horses for courses.
I am getting to the stage where I need a Stanair to get into a lifted G so I am now looking at more comfortable means of daily travel a beefy modern engined MB is right up my street and Mil Gs for play time.

I often see you go by from my other office window, call my mobile before you arrive and the door will be open for you and the kettle is always on in Check Point Charlie.
We could perhaps have a look at that erant accelerator pedal.
