The rear wash wipe has failed on my 300GDS 1991. The rear wiper switch still works but the switch for wash wipe does nothing. Any ideas where to start looking, and how?

The pump for the rear washer is the same one as the front washer. Does the front one work?
I believe (although I've not witnessed it) is the pump runs in 2 directions dependednt on the window f/ r .
So you could start by checking to see if the pump is running (at all) or in one direction only. Then reverse the polarity to see if it runs the oposite. Then locate the fault eithe relectric or mechanical
I think the pump is under the bonnet but I can't remember. Its white with small pipes!
Get someone to operate it and use your ears.

I forgot to say that, yes, the front washers and wipers work fine. Maybe the switch has stopped working. Is it difficult to get to the switch?

Yes, you are right. It is the switch that is wrong. To get to it you have to remove the steering wheel and cowl to access a screw that holds the long wooden strip on the dashboard. then you have to remove this strip starting from the passenger side by carefully sticking a flat screwdriver beneath it. Then you can remove the three screws that hold the top of the central wooden piece of the dashboard. Next is to remove the radio and, the two screws that you will find at either side of the radio and the coin tray situated next to the radio.

Here is a picture of what you have to remove (in red screws, in blue, just parts pressed into position):

Once done this, you can access all switches from behind (carefully). The switches can generally be serviced if you are a bit of a handyman. Otherwise the one you are looking at costs some £ 25.

Thanks very much for the info, and for taking the trouble to do the diagram. I will probably get a garage to do it, but I wanted to be sure what was involved. I have found that the normal Mercedes dealers have little G-Wagen experience, so are not very good with problems like this. I have been quoted 7 hours labour to have a look at it.

Thanks I'll give them a go. I used to go to Caversham who I found very good but I don't know if they are still servicing G's.

Before you are quoted seven hours for this job, think again. I did this twice over the weekend (see my other post about electric woes) and I reckon that each time it took me just under half an hour to dismantle all the pieces to access the switches, replace one of them and put everything together again.

It's child's play really.
