A Puch 240 GD driver in Tanzania faces problems in buying a new engine for his car.
Problems faced: The mercedes country representative states that the Puch 240 GD (1986) was made in Austria and does not match with the Mercedes GD. He does not know which engine will fit into the car. The chasis number and the engine number do not match with their computer records.

According to my information the two cars are identical and the engine even has the Mercedes star on the top.

What shall I tell the country representative. Which engine will fit into my car?
The original mercedes engine is quite underpowered. Is there another stronger engine which will fit into my car?

Maybe somebody can advice me

Would be very grateful for any comment

Thanks

it is identical to the mercedes. Its the 4 cylinder 240 from the saloon car. If you can get a chassis number for a 123 series saloon with a 240 diesel in it you will have to change some bits over like the sump and possibley the water pump.

Also, the 617 5-cylinder shouldn't require more than a bit of innovation, African-bush-style to fit. Will give a nice increase in oomph and they're plentiful around - just look for a crashed 300d. But don't limit your search to this one vehicle. Thousands upon thousands of Isuzu 3ton lorries in Africa were fitted with this engine in the 80's and it was also fitted as a conversion to Land Rovers, Land Cruisers, the odd chevy or ford and even can be found in things like military vehicles, industrial compressors (ie borehole drilling plants), generators, water pumps and boats. In fact wherever in Africa you see a 5-cylinder diesel engine, it's near 100% sure one of these.
On another note, do you want to post his chassis number here and we can have a look and try and make some sense out of it...
Whatever you decide to do, best of luck!
