Starting
Having trouble starting, car has been laid up for almost a year now with me being out of the country. Before it used to start all the time every time, now after changing plugs charging battery (battery was new) etc will only start with a jump. Also when its going ticks over fine but go out for a run 30 miles whatever come back and the revs seem to die sometimes almost stalling. All of this never happened before. Any ideas.
Thanks
Steve
Just a thought but if there was unleaded in there for all that time it stood then the injectors etc could be gummed up. New-fangled petrol has varnishes in which can really mess up fuel systems if left sitting about, happens to lawnmowers, motorbikes, outboards etc all the time, though in my experience they usually free themselves up after a good run. Have you tried using any injector cleaner? Might be something else too of course like perished hoses causing air leaks or something but would also just bear the varnish thing in mind, you never know!
Hi Steve,
I had exactly the same set of probs with my W123 after a layup -changed einjectors, cap rotor.plugs & leads etc and it turned out to be a faulty coil- stupid thing cost $35- maybe worth a look.

Your battery may well be knackered despite being new a year ago,
ordinary lead acid automotive batteries do not generally like being left unused/deep discharged -- ie laid up for a year, compared to "boat" or liesure batteries --- are more expensive but designed/constructed to perform after long periods of non-use.

Those white ceramic things are ballast resistors on the low voltage side of the coil. I have heard that they can pack up. Get a multimeter and check the low voltage side of the coil. Coils die too.Don't know how to check them DIY
Thanks John will look into cleaning the injectors, had,nt thought of that. Will start checking for airleaks as well. Why is it that when you lay a car up things start packing up, front fogs have gone I noticed and the windscreen wipers are playing up as well.
But back to the starting and runninig issues, I wonder if the timing is out as well, knowing my luck it will probably be that, injectors and air leak
Any other ideas ??
thanks
