A totally random question.
Would you still buy/love your G if it has no connection to MB what so ever? Like... if all Gs were badged as Puch and has nothing to do with Mercedes-Benz, would you still buy one?
I would.
yes!! for me a steyr-puch baged G is cooler!
but then I bought l322 range rover.....so my sanity is questionable at the moment!! :?
Yes, I would love to buy a Steyr Puch G, though no longer available in any market. How about a Magna G?
Unfortunately no, and if I can answer for Spider, no.
Yes. Mercedes as a brand is tarnished by the collapse in quality from 1995>. I would be happy to sport a Puch badge, can you get them cheaper in Germany?
Unfortunately no, and if I can answer for Spider, no.

The badge is important. Not for other people to see, but for me to see. I had a badge on the bonnet of my "Africa car", and it is the most amazing feeling to follow a merc badge through the bush.
the real question here is though would you buy a peugeot p4???
Well I've got one despite the fact that it has the badge.
With rare exceptions (E500 or some models pre. 1985 maybe) theres nothing much that interests me in the MB stable. Don't like the image, don't like the quality, don't like the looks.

Puch have a proud heritage and the G-wagen has excellent forebears in the Pinzgaur and the Haflinger. Mercedes 4 wheel drive heritage is much more limited. The famous Unimog for example was a company purchased by Daimler Benz rather than an inhouse development.
Used to love Mercs, but the last one I owned was a W124 (E320, following on from an E300 in which I did 173000 miles). The W124 replacement was a pile of dogshit like most Mercs since (I know because my brothers had several since). There's nothing in the range I like, but I'm tempted to buy a W123 at the moment, for me their best era was the 60s - 80s.
Thats not strictly true. DB have been involved in 4 wheel drive almost since day 1. Ok the Unimog was purchased, but DB took it from lawnmower status  to where it is now. And as far as the G is concerned, way more DB
input then Puch, or even Steyr-Daimler-Puch. Now if you said the G was more Hanomag then DB or Puch I might agree
I rate the Steyr element rather than Puch one
Cos I can also get a Steyr tractor ( and I might)
Plus a Steyr rifle ( air-rifle, rimfire? or centrefire)
Full set
PS
One of the contenders for the Armys emergency purchase to replace the snatch landrover i.e. IED "proof" sub 7500kg vehicle ( Oceolet?) is powered by a Steyr engine.
re Marks comments, the P4 demonstates that another manufacturer's running gear could be adapted to the SDP chassis :?: And that more than anything the coil sprung 4x4 design originated with the 1970 Range Rover :!:
For me it doesn't make a difference what's on the bonnet, except that I have noticed that, when we go 'on tour', people don't look at us as friendly as they did when we had our old defender. Therefore, I might actually rebadge my MB to look more like a Puch, possibly add a few more dents/scratches, etc................... :P
Way ahead of ye there Phileas, re the lived in /apparently uncared for look.
Took years of dedication & hard work mind.
a merc badge through the bush.
Yes my Merc Badges have got me through plenty of bush
technically speaking, if you look back through the G files, Mortinson did a fantastic history of MB and four/six wheel drive, which from memory pre date most rough terrain vehicle that have been mentioned in this thread.

It is all personal choice. I would mind any badge on my car, because I know it is a Merc. As for sedans, apart from the very first C and E classes, I personally think they are the best out there. Let's face it, all cars are made of plastic these days, so if I have to drive plastic, I would rather river plastic put together by Hans and Friedrich.
Since I spent a goodly amount of time crawling over the Steyr fire truck that we have here in town - it was on display for our town "Summerfestival" day, I didn't set fire to the chip pan - I guess the answer would be - any badge, number of wheels irrelevant - just not in RED.
A few years ago I had a red lwb turbo diesel with aircon, jump seats in perfect condition, 65k on the clock, service history, bla, bla blady bla, I could not sell it beacuse of the colour. Russ was one of the many who pulled up his nose.
Yes sorry Christo :)
That was a pretty unique 460, extremely rare to find one that good but it just didn’t look right in that colour.
I personally think G Wagens are very colour sensitive, in fact there’s not many colours that do look “rightâ€Â.

Yes, a Jan 1997 dark green Puch G300TD SWB for 13.8k with very very basic interior. No wood was used at all, the central console is totally made of grey plastic. No sunroof, no headlamp waterjets, no arches.
