Managed to strip the thread re-inserting the fuel tank plug on my 280GE auto.

The plug has an integrated filter. Meantime, I have inserted a make shift "bung" but the engine is spluttering as if straved of fuel and stalls on depression of accelerator.

What is the current issue and how best might I repair the stripped thread to the tank? Is the filter necessary on the fuel tank plug?

Thanks in anticipation.......

Hi with the strainer removed any sediment would be collected in the fuel filter which could restrict the fuel supply to the engine resulting in poor performance..what was the reason for removing the filter was it contaminated? to prove the filter is clogged disconnect the pipe between the filter and the fuel pump and with a clean can of petrol run the engine...is it a metal or plastic tank? as the chances of repair to the threads in either are limited.

Hi
Thanks for your reply. Tank drained due to pumping diesel in error.

With the plug removed the tank appears to have two skins, the first holding the female thread, (now completely stripped), there is an o ring between them, though doesnt seem to correspond th either filter or drain plug diameter.

Upon inserting a temporary bung, conical in shape, I may have formed a seal in both "skin" apertures, which may have caused the fuel starvation issue. To remedy this I could cut down the length of the bung.

However, this still leaves me withe the issue of the stripped threads.
Maybe a sleave with a new thread could be tapped in but the original plug and filter would become redundant.
How appropriate might it be to run with out the filter ?

Thanks

It's a metal tank.

I'll need to find the fuel pump and filter, suppose they are at the blunt end of the vehicle!

Hi there is an anti surge capsule in the bottom of the tank which holds the last dregs of fuel coantained and not sloshing about on the bends...fuel pump filter and accumulator are mounted just forward of the tank covered with a splash guard between the tank and the rear suspension...you will a damaged the capsule so that the tank will need to be at least a quarter full to enable the pump to suck ..put 10 gall in and see if it runs properly.see "jasontouchofclass" posts this forum on same subject...

Didnt want to fill the tank, as I had planned on having the threads replaced and have already chucked out abot 40ltrs of fuel, but I do understand your reasoning.
I'll shorten the length of the makeshift plug and see if that resolves the issue temporarilly until I can have the threads looked at.

To be frank I would willingly transfer ownership (sell) to someone with more time and enthusiasm!

Many thanks.

Hello yachty,

Your options are: if the sizes are available, fit a helicoil or 'timesert' it. Failing this, it is a case of tank removal and send to a fuel tank repairers to machine in a sleeve with your original thread cut-in.

Orrr, a new Tank.

Cheers,
