He means that the original G engine was swapped with a genuine 603 turbo from another MB, not that the G was originally a turbo diesel.

Exactly. Spoke to the chap earlier. He did the transplant himself and reckons the only major tweek was the air intake.....I think. The engine came from a LHD drive sedan. I'm hoping to take a look at the weekend..

What do you guys reckon on the price?

seems a little high, even thought it looks in excellent condition. I am never sure what to think on things that have been changed from the original (engine wise). Is it an old members car? And what was the mileage of the engine BEFORE he put it in?

Though one cant fault the interior based on my eyesight and the pictures....

Hi Tom it will not have the G wagen oil control sump if all he revamped was the intake..there is an automatic in Northern Ireland.. Obsidian black/grey leather and a few more miles with the LHD turbo manifold installed same as fitted by MB to the American market G' exports (had to fit a "slimline" brake servo to get everything squeezed in)......and for less money

Cheers chaps.

I do like the black one in NI and the leather is a bonus but I think I would prefer a manual. And anyway, this ones in Devon which is a bit easier to get to! I won't be making any rash decisions though and will ask about the oil control sump.

Apparently the mileage of the donor engine was similar to the one that came out.

Re: RHD 463 with a turbo diesel?

Had a look yesterday. It's a really tidy car, nice colour, nice wheels, interior clean and in good nick. It goes well. The current owner didn't think it was hugely faster than the original but it holds its speed much better. It certainly coped with inclines way more easily than the 280 does.

The 463 really is a different beast to the 460, I could certainly tolerate a few hours on a motorway in it. The load-space seemed a lot smaller though.

The only flaws from what I could see were:

A bit of black smoke on start-up from cold.
Piece of wooden trim required for passenger door.
Apparently there is a problem with the fuel sender that means the gauge isn't accurate.
Bite point of clutch is very high (not sure if this is a problem or just something to get used to)

It's had a lot of new parts fitted along with the engine including a new radiator, springs, shocks and those wheels can't be cheap. All 5 tyres are good.

The other main problems are selling my G first and convincing myself that spending 10k on a 20 year old car is a good idea! Lots of alternatives out there that would probably suit my needs for that money (or less).

If its a genuine OM603A and the rest is in a nick as good as described I think that it is well worth the money

Says the man with a '91 GDS!!

It's certainly making me think but really should check out a few more 463's and perhaps even some less capable off-roaders.

I paid around that for mine 4 years ago (same colour!) but petrol and auto, thought it too much at the time but it was well taken care of and it shows in what type of things go wrong a few years down the line.

That sounds like a pretty good deal 4 years ago.

Problem is there's really not a lot to compare it to.

Re: RHD 463 with a turbo diesel?

There was this one in Leicester not long ago (robin or rob?) and he says he paid 11.5 or so for his SWB about a year ago, but admittedly that is the top end of the market. The GEL with a burnt out dash got something like 3-3.5k not long ago on fleabay (if it actually sold), and others have gone for 6-8k.
As someone once said...a car is worth what one is willing to pay for it..sorry if that doesn't help much!

Well, you can certainly spend eighty grand on a far less capable off-roader:
