A few questions about G300 TDs
Yeeah, so! The 996 and I don't really have a spark so I am thinking switching back to Gs. Since I cannot afford a good G500 so I am looking at those early G300TDs.
Just a question to those who know about them... do you think they have adequate power? The 300GD is a bit too slow really...
All relative! To me yes... to Spider no.....

What don't you like about the 996 and which model is it ?
I imagine that no matter how much power a G300TD has it is going to feel pretty slow after the 911 !!!
I had a 996, I know what you mean, it was crap off road, as for towing the horsebox, well lets just say I was not impressed!
the 300 TD is THE best engine [all round] mercedes fitted in the G. full stop !
i remember not being able to keep up with mark in his G300TD on the way to stonehenge, :( and my G300 petrol was no slouch! and then spider came along and blew us all away !!!!!!
i have the same engine in my cabrio 460 and the vehicle is like an imprezza since fitting the snorkel :D
i think the G300TD hold their value better than all the other G's, which must mean something.....
btw, mynadiesel can easily put the power up to 250 bhp
Since I cannot afford a good G500

A good 500 will always be hard to find. It did take me a while to find mine. Surely in Germany there must be some 500 bargains - in fact there must be some nice post 2003 500's which will have the 5.5 V8's?..........*Homer Simpson drool*
On the plus side ... well I think Huss and Maxwell has summed it up, on the down side, and currently really is a down side is the petrol consumption. At a steady 60MPH you can get 20.1 MPG (about 470 miles to the tank).... going up to 70MPH you will drop to 19.1 (about 400 Miles to the tank) and Spider Speed.....you will get about 14/15 MPG (350 Miles to the tank). The aircon running and over 90MPH just don't look at the consumption at all - you will cry!
But, and I do mean but, it is difficult to put a price on; your smile, your kids going 'faster daddy' and (with this weather) the windows down driving through both town and country......... The envy I will feel for the likes of Ferdi and other AMG drivers will not be measurable!
Some Spider Advice? There is nothing stopping you keeping a watch on the market - as you never know your 500 maybe just around the corner!

a quick glance at the side shot - I thought it was an Audi!
re you comment about a hot sexy girl/996l.... one does not have to fall in love, but it is it nice to get in and out though
Sell both cars - get a 500! 'nuff said
Spider1V
it's rhd in germany? surely a lhd would of been much cheaper...
spider is right - if you want a g500 sell both....
I don't know... you can get a decent G500 for €25-30k or you could get a 98/99 G500 for €18-20k....
what's the Porsche worth? The G300 ought to be worth half of what you need...
ought to be worth a least half the price of a G500.... so with the Porsche you should have the money...
flog the porker, turbo your taxi :!:
blaaaaah, saw 2 military Gs today, it just excits me!!!... I really think that I will ever do such irrational thing as buying a 911 again :S
What is your budget if you got rid of all your cars? :?:
Come on - lets see if we can get you in a nice 500!

One thing came to my mind while reading that topic, what is a good 500 and a bad 500 ?? Are they not suppose to be bullet proof ?? that can drive on and drive on ?? There are quite a lots of them out there at good money ??
Sure the 996 and a good old 300 should make up for a good used 500 ??
We have seen a few 500 passing by on that forum or throught the club ....
Now is mine a good or a bad 500 ?? :D

there was an early 463 500 on e-bay perhaps a year ago with ex King Constantine connections which failed to reach £15,000. Someone missed a bargain :?:
For that much money you can get a Brabus....
Hey Fred,
Here are the criteria in my mind...
A bad G500:
1. externally rough looking.
2. obvious rust on the body, round the corners especially.
3. dents
4. milage more than 300k km
If none of these points fit into a G500 in question, then it is a good G500!
To Paul... I was thinking about that 500GE you were talking about, they were asking for £14500 I think. It was a limited edition 500GE but not a G500, sadly.
I second that - once saw a 500 with more rust on the underbody than my 9-years-older 300! Looked like it spent winter in a cold part of Europe or near the beach and wasn't washed very often on the underside.
Also on the 500GE I heard some rumour about it being a smoker's car
Congrats..that was quick!
I have a R reg 3.4 Carrera. The driving experience in town feels too much like the audi A6 I used to have, although on the Autobahn it's a completely different story.
It is hard to say what i don't like about the 996... i guess it's just the same as the situation of when a guy sees a really hot and sexy girl but still doesn' t fall in love with her.
