Hello all!

I'm curious - who likes the M102 in their 230GE? Do you have a SWB or LWB G? How does it do for gas? Is it reliable? Is it a loud engine? Does it make decent power? How much does it cost you to service it? Can you compare these attributes to any other engines found in other G's you've owned?

Thanks!

Hunter

The 230 is a lovely engine, a little under powered for the g,but free revving, but fuel economy is better than the 280, and I found smoother and quieter, parts are cheap for the 230 , although timing chain is duplex I have heard of some faliure resulting in engine damage but rare, my friend had a 230 in his 124 seris saloon and it had done over 240,000 miles and was still as good as it was when new.

I have owned a 230,280,300 and 560 v8. I can say I loved them all for different reasons, although the 280 was to juicy and the engine Is tappy. But for pure "keep it simple stupid", the 230 was a little diamond.

It took some persuading to get me to try the 230. I expected it to be noisy and under powered.
My experience in a SWB is that it pulls as strongly as a 300D, makes a lovely noise and drinks less juice than a 280.

I haven't noticed that much difference in fuel consumption between the 230 I had previously and the 280 I have now although I did/do few miles so don't pay all that much attention to it.

I liked the 230 and don't feel it was particularly underpowered compared to the 280 and is probably a lot perkier than the 300D. The 280 is smooth though and sounds so much nicer.

Hi

I have been driving a humble 230GE for 5 years now - great engine, simple to have maintained, always been reliable for me, reasonably cheap to run for the weight/size of the vehicle, performance is adequate provided you are prepared to work it a bit, just suffers from a lack of low end torque, so maybe not the best choice if heavy towing is required. Cruising in it at 50 - 60 mph is quiet and refined (compared to a Defender anyway) and I wouldnt part with it.

If I have to buy a 460 it will only be the 230. Not much less power than the 280 a lot better consumption and super reliable. I had one for 8 years, and the only reason I sold it was because I was offered silly money. Money talks, and we all listen.
