Hello - I have a rust bubble starting below the windscreen. Is it possible to remove the windscreen without breaking it ? I'd like to get in there, derust and paint it all and before replacing it.

I had mine replaced by a firm here recently and the fitter said that it was easy. Do you know the rope trick? That is what he used. It is not glued like modern vehicles.
Lift the seal and push out a corner of the glass from the seal then continue all the way around use a blade of a screwdriver to do that. That removes the glass. Then the seal comes away.
To reinstall put in a length of rope 5 mm in the gap in the seal where the glass goes. Push the glass against the seal and remove the rope which lifts the seal and allows the glass to be positioned.

It's a bit difficult to describe in words.
If you can wait till Easter I'll be in Sydney and I'll show ya :D :D Yippeeee

The sneaky rope trick

Thanks Roly .
What's an amazing coincidence !!!
I was planning on doing all of the difficult maintenance work at Easter so
come up to Brisbane - it's only an hour by plane from Sydney -
don't forget your overalls and spanners.

Cheers !

well, why don't you spend a new sealing for the windscreen? If you do so, you can use a sharp knife and cut the rubber seal paralell to the screen to remove the windshield easily. That's what we have done in the past. Especially if you have light tinted Windscreens.

Ausgezeichnet

Thanks Klaus,
I'll ring MB and see if they have one.
The old seal is in bad shape anyway.

SCREEN REMOVAL

Hi am in the process of painting my G and as a professional auto glass instaler was replacing the winsheild on my other truck he offered to remove all the glass in the G for me, every thing went well untill he took or tried to take the front screen out, he noticed that one corner of the glass had delaminated itself, although he was an expert using the rope method to get the screen out it broke, so cut the rubber off to save the screen also check to see if the delamination process has started

Yes Roly,
I think it's because we're so far away that the locals get clever
at doing it cheaply - it's probably a cut-down truck windscreen !!
We'll see how much my driveshafts cost when I do them.

Re: Screen removal

Lucky you .. mine will cost around ?180 for the rubber and glass. No hope of getting a tempered glass cut out. This is like spending ?1200 in there parts!!

Whats all the fuss about plain untinted front screens, a sheet of laminated window glass, of the correct thickness obviousley, cut to size and in this country retaining the manufacturers etching mark is all you need, our local windscreen guy did it on the insurance, but it would only have been a few quid anyway.
Am I missing something? ( Apart from tact & diplomacy )

Hiya Scouse,
No I have'nt clocked the silver G yet but there are a few more coming into this part of Queensland especially a nice - looking yellow LWB. I passed the guy recently but we were both in opposite streams of traffic so could'nt stop and gab.
I'm coming over to Europe in three weeks for the World cup game AUS v Japan ( no tickets yet but) so I might take a windscreen rubber back in my luggage.
Cheers Jimmy Mac
