wheel bearing problem
guys is it possible to sh*g a wheel bearing by over tightening a wheel? obviously not a properely built g wagon one :D but having swapped the tyres on my LR90 on Saturday later that afternoon the passenger rear started making a remarkedly loud graunching noise on limping home and jacking up lots of vertical play in the wheel, lowered the jack, then snapped my wheel brace standing on it in the attempt to lossen the wheel nuts
wheel bearing replaced this morning am arguing about who pays, fare or unwarrented?
might you get better advice on this from one of the LROwners forums :?:
Nothing to do with over tightening...Land rovers come (almost) without wheel bearing grease.
This is no joke....
My LR 90's rear wheel bearings were gone after 30k due to no grease.
In my car it made a lot of grinding noise.
You can't loose a bearing by over tightening. There is not much more to say about it.
Weird coincidence and disappointing re. the over tightening. NST may not be the sharpest tools in the box but when I’ve watched them they have always used a torque wrench to tighten wheel nuts.
Think it through Russ, your wheel nuts tie the wheel to the axle, if it tied it to the axle housing, or anything else, the wheel can't turn.
If you snap an axle, or disintegrate a bearing the wheel falls off. When I got stuck in France with a disintegrated bearing, the calliper kept the wheel from falling off.
surely that only applies if you have disc brakes, I have lost a complete wheel on the rear to just such a problem on a drum braked car
Hello G-Day,
Overtightening either, the front, or rear, wheels would not affect the wheel bearing in the slightest.
The fact a wheel bearing was replaced that morning suggests to me, a parts failure or faulty workmanship; in any case, my book says the responsibilty lies with your mechanic or garage and/or part supplier. It should be down to them to remeady the fault.
Cheers,
