I have found a 1984 300GD auto SWB which I want to buy. Just one question.
What is the drivability of an old 300gd with an auto gearbox? I won't be using the car for serious offroading (For that I have my cabrio :D ).
I will use it for commuting to work and back and long road trips into Africa .

Thanks
Johann

Well, it's not that bad provided that all the mechanics are in good condition. I mean, the differential of power lost in the auto versus the manual is not great at all and it has the bonus of much more comfort and driveability (specially off-road!).

That auto can be locked in any gear and it's generally regarded as very good so only problem is, as usual, condition, condition.

I'm lucky enough that this G had only one owner from new and is in an excelent condition. The owners widow is currently selling the car which shows G's do outlive their owners.
I was only concerned that the G would be a dog with the auto gearbox compared with the manual.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge

Hi Johann,

Read with interest, your post.

Did you buy this car in the end?

You would not believe how rare that RHD model would be here in the UK.

If you did, enjoy! If not, how much is a ticket to your beautiful country? Time for a return trip!!

Cheers from Ireland

Johann,
If you are not buying that G-wagen, you'd better let me know - I am looking for one to use during my holidays...

Update

The car turned out to be a 280GE! It is still for sale by the old lady for about 8400 Sterling.
I'm still contemplating if I should buy or not. But are looking around for a diesel.
Personaly I think you'll get much more car for your money in the UK.
I'm trying to convince my boss to send me to London for 6 months. Then I can import one to RSA. :D

Mercfan if you are looking for a G in SA let me know and I can forward you details.
A good place to look is www.autotrader.co.za. Search for wagen or wagon.
Or www.gwagenclub.co.za there is a classifieds section.
