My solenoid is a bit sticky (to say the least). I got what I was told was the right starter - having crawled underneath it's a mirror image of what I need - the solenoid should hang down when the motor's in place. Have I been given one for a W123 280?

Re: Starter Motor 280GE

Hi Nigel the solenoid should be on the top part "not vertiical" of the starter when installed... A sticking solenoid can be pulled apart and cleaned "No oil" soft pencil lead stroked onto the moving section... polish liner with metal polish...this will not work if badly corroded....

That sounds different to what's on it at the moment - the solenoid is closer to the road than the bonnet. If I fitted the one I've been supplied, the solenoid will be under the exhaust manifold, and it doesn't look like the heat shield would fit over the top of the solenoid.

Hi they look like two different types of starter..with the solenoid underneath any water from the road will collect in the solenoid....the correct starter is manufactured by Bosch and the solenoid sits off the vertical looking at the brush end of it...also check the one you took off for the number of teeth on the pinion...some have the right flange but wrong number of teeth.....

Re: Starter Motor 280GE

The top photo came from this site http://www.fourbyfourclub.com/W460EngineParts/W460Starter280GE.htm

I've not taken the old one off the engine yet - but it is the same as the one listed and photographed on the site in the first photo. The second photo is one I took off eBay listed for a W123 or R107 with the M110 engine - it's the same as the recon starter I got this afternoon - and it's the same orientation as the schematic you mailed me.

I'm puzzled.

Re: Starter Motor 280GE

Hi Nigel there are a variety of starter motor manufacturers including "Prestolite" supplying a starter that fits the M110 engine in the G' wagon configuration. GSF Parts have one at GBP 79 50 + vat..the critical aspects are the voltage..number of teeth. mounting pad dimensions and bolt hole locations...in 20 plus years your G' could have had the starter changed (more than once) if the fuel management was not set up right for the cold start sequence....is you current starter not engaging or just clicking??

Re: Starter Motor 280GE

I'd be surprised if it had been replaced more than once at 92k - nothing's showing signs of having been bodged, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was the original.

It's just clicking, not operating the motor - doesn't click if it's not in neutral or park - no attempt to crank the engine. Except when it does decide to crank, then it starts first time.

Until last week it might click a couple of times before it cranked the engine, I can now turn the key up to 30 odd times before it cranks. Wires connected to the solenoid seem well connected.

I'm planning on getting the original unit reconditioned next week if I can't turn up one oriented the right way this weekend.

Re: Starter Motor 280GE

Hi Nigel MMmm the ex factory fit is with the solenoid on the top....the action of the solenoid is to pull the teeth into mesh "no Bendix" and bottom out on the contacts to energise the motor..these contacts get verdigris contamination causing the problem you are experiencing.if the solenoid is on the bottom and accessible you could service it insitu!!. water from the heater box/air intake drain can run in that area.hence the solenoid being on the top in the dry...
