My rear washer has stopped working

I have searched through the forum and found similar problem with rear washer - in that - the rear wiper is working and the front washer and wipers are also working.

The advice was that the switch on the dash was faulty. There is a description of removing the steering wheel, stereo and trims to get to the switch. Only difference is that my G steering wheel has an airbag, does this complicate its removal?

I'm not sure, but would think the rear washer is powered by its own electric pump and nothing to do with the front ones. Try to locate that pump and check that first. Just as likely this is the problem as the switch.

Alternatively - surely the rear wash/wipe switch can be extracted without removing the dash??

My 2 pennies.

Re: Rear washer failed

Actually on my 300GE (not sure if it's still so on the G320) the front and rear washers use the same pump, running in reverse, so if your front washer is working that is good news (your pump works) but it might be jammed in reverse due to fungi/dirt/etc in the washer tank.

Have a look into the tank to check for dirt.
Depending on how dirty you are willing to get your hands, you might be able to take the motor out to give it a good wash, and maybe remove whatever is clogging it in reverse. Or try applying power to it both ways to see if it runs freely when removed.

Also don't forget to check the nozzle at the back for obstruction, if gunk got into the pipe then it will likely block your nozzle. When I had that at the front, I removed the whole tank and cleaned it out (some gunk inside) and then replaced the nozzle. Works like new now. Aiming it is a bit of a pain though, and on your G320 you should have 2 nozzles up front.

Ps. Any pictures of your rare car...if mortinson is to be believed, 1 of only 6 Gs of 1996, possibly only 1 of 2 SWB.

And not to forget airbag removal - not too difficult with the right tools, but need to be very careful as you're dealing with a deadly explosive:

With engine turned off, can you not hear the pump when you press the rear wiper/washer switch? I would avoid renewing dash swtch unless you really have to, potential to mess other things up.
Also if you do take motor out, , siphon fluid out first or else it drains through aperture, and be very carefull not to press rubber washer into/through the tank!( Where motor mounts)

Little picture to help you visualise, the two holes are for the two pumps, one for pane washers and bigger one for headlamps.:

Re: Rear washer failed

I had the same problem a while back and found that the rear washer jet was plugged up. I solved it by removing it and putting it in hot water for a little while and blowing an air tube through it. It's not given me a problem since (that was over a year ago). Hope that helps/ph

Re: Rear washer failed

Big Al,

If you hear your pump working, when operating the switch, the rear wiper working but no water, it is more likely, the rear wash jet hose has dettached from the jet nozzle feed, this accessable by removing the rear n/s/r interior panel.

If you find, that neither, the front or rear wiper operates, check for power supply to the pump motor (o/s/f inner wing). It is common for the socket plug of the motor to be corroded.

You need only remove the Steering Wheel if a fault is located to your wiper/indicator stalk.

Should you need to get that far, then PM me.

Cheers,

Re: Rear washer failed

Thanks for the replies. I will investigate this weekend. Hopefully a bloked jet!
I have not been able to look this week as the car has been at the garage getting a leak in one of the fuel lines at the tank fixed..... if it's not one thing it's another.

Re: Rear washer failed

Glad to say I got the washer working, and it was a blockage at the noozle, caused by thick gluepy screen wash.

Now, next on the list is trying to get the drivers side electric window working again.
