Hi all

I am new to the forum, but have been reading it for some time.

I own a 1989 W460 LWB 300GD, with a 617 engine.

The engine runs ok, the gear box it’s starting to make some strange noise, it is a 4 speed gear box.

My question is: is there any MB 5 speed gear box that will fit my car without major works?

I live in Mozambique and here not even MB technicians are experts so it needs to be an easy job.

Regarding the engine, which engine with more HP can I use to change my 617?

I have to drive a lot in sand roads and sometimes more HP would be better.

Hi the OM 617A engine with the factory fitted turbo is the optimum engine and the Five speed G'box with the five speed gear change and control arms is the gearbox to fit ..however some mechanical skills are required and a good exhaust welder/fabricator...if ypur existing gearbox rattles when you start the engine but the rattle goes away when you press the clutch it is the clutch release bearing that is faulty.if the G' box whines then the oil may be low ***only use automatic transmission fluid ATF not thick gear oil....

The gearbox you are talking about is for the 617a or for the 617?

What is the code for that gearbox? It equipped which cars?

Thanks

Hi the 5 speed G'box is Getrag model GL275 series 717/435 or 445 will interface with either OM617 or OM 617A engines...similar profile to G box in W123 and W124 mercedes cars also fitted to the manual 230GE and 280 GE.....The 4 speed G' box has more torque through the gears but less speed in top gear than the 5 speed G'box..I have a 1985 SWB 300GD fitted with the OM617A engine and Five speed Getrag G'box.....it cost GBP 3500 to complete the retrofit including purchasing the engine from USA and fabricating the exhaust/turbo interface pipework....performance overall is 25% better than the original OM 617 engine instal with better fuel economy....
