Re: my new G...

now cleaned and with the bling bits off, the next job is relocating the winch solenoid...it just looks too messy like this.

Looks very clean - aside from the winch as you noted. Hope the chassis below is also clean...I am always afraid of cars with a winch, as they might have seen some heavy off-road use.

This one has seen no off road at all....the winch is never used...
The (well heeled) previous owner of this truck planned to do an organized tour to norway with "Mercedes Benz off road" a fully catered MB factory initiative.
He had orc put a top warn winch on the car, and fit an extra diesel water filter.
Bang *4000€*
He & his family never went on the planned trip for which there was no extra kit needed anyway!
The chassis looks like new (euhm, like a 50k road used chassis)

I'm going to put the solenoid behind the bumper and fit a rope and fairlead to tidy up the front.

Lot's of jobs & mods to do on his truck!

ciao,
G

Re: my new G...

hi g,

nice rig. i have the same winch and you might want to fit the solenoid pack up in the motor compartment. the warn winch (or i should say even the warn winch) can have a corrosion issue with the contacts. the only way to solve it is to get it into a place where it is mostly warm and dry.....or fit a brightwell solenoid pack which the winch challenge people use (not only is it fully waterproof, it is also a lot smaller than the standard packs one gets with the winches). you will have to disconnect the remote plug though: fiddly job, but if you've got a nice afternoon to do it in, doable (just don't have any beers until after it done!).

good luck/ph

Re: my new G...

hmmm...
from what I understand the warn xdc has the waterproof solenoid as standard? I was planning to fit it next to the winch in the bumper on a custom made bracket. It is exposed there, but I can't find a suitable place under the bonnet. In fact, I couldn't fit an egg there...it's stashed.

Re: my new G...

Lose the warn solenoid pack and get an allbright solenoid, much more reliable, easier to fit in tight space, under bonnet.

Re: my new G...

I was finally able to get some work done on my truck...
...first I relocated the winch solenoid to under the bonnet and added an emergency cut of switch. Than I fitted a hawse instead of a roller fairlead.
The front looks soooo tidy now...me happy!
Than I started the welder up and produced me some home made rocksliders to save my precious bodywork. The rocksliders fit to the original sidestep holes with M10 bolts, and they are very very strong made entirely out of 10mm thick steel.
While I was at it I fixed me a spare wheel carrier that shows the nice side of the wheel and eliminated the need for the wheel cover.

Re: my new G...

some more pics, and also one of the super simple cargo system I installed.
I want to drill as little holes as possible so I bought two 135 thule bars and attached them to the factory tie downs with cable tensioners.
It's solid as a rock! No holes required.

Sunroof not an option.

Very smart looking W463! I particularly like the winch fitting.

Re: my new G...

nice work g! I particularly like the remote plug. Mine is on top of my grill and I've always hated it being there since fitting: just looks wrong (although functionally it is fine or course). can't take it off now as there'll be a big hole in the front of the car. just out of interest, how long did it take you to fit up the rock sliders. was it a difficult job (looks neat fit btw). ph

Re: my new G...

Thanks,

I like the winch setup too....the only thing is the hawse fairlead is a lot nicer to look at than the roller fairlead, but hard on the cable....
It was incredible difficult to find a spot under the hood for the solenoid and cut of switch. I swear you couldn't fit an egg under there anymore...
I find it amazing how they manage to fit 4 liter twin turbo's and even v12's under the same hood????

The rocksliders took half a day to measure cut and weld, a couple of hours to sand and paint...and 3 minutes to fit.

First I measured one support bracket very carefully, than I made 6 of them exactly the same. Than I bolted all 6 brackets to the chassis and fitted the square sliders with clamps. Unbolted the whole assembly, and spot welded the brackets to the slider. Then I bolted to whole assembly to the chassis again to make sure everything fits perfectly. Unbolt, welding, some more welding, sanding, done!

Re: my new G...

Now that the G is ready to roll, I loaded it up and went to our local off road spot. I wanted to check flex and travel when fully loaded. I coped beautifully with the stock suspension...Nothing touched, there was almost no extra sag in the back and the suspension flexed more easy than when the truck was empty. I have decided that I am going to leave the suspension stock! It is a very technical little terrain and it was very dry...but nothing stopped the G. A torquey engine with an automatic and full lockers is the way to go.
here are some pictures...
