W463 270cdi versus W461 280cdi on the road
Yesterday we drove the "PUR" 400km north to get my new G270cdi.
The drive was very harsh and you had to talk loud to have a conversation.
We drove both cars back at exactly the same speed +/-120 km/h.
Not only was the 270 much more comfortable, it used 10,3liters of diesel per 100km (average) and the pur used a whopping 15,4 liters of diesel per 100km.
Why is there such a big difference? The trucks weigh the same, have the same gearbox, same aerodynamics (or lack of)...but you would think the more high tech V6 in the PUR would beat the older truck's economy???
I don't understand, and it was a bummer for my friend with his brand new 60.000€ PUR.
I assured him that his 461 would be the daddy off road...but I suspect that it's going to be to hard & stiff there too.
Maybe the energy output of the inline 5 is smaller? They are two very different engine though!
Tyres?
Have a look at tech data for the 280, shows l / km for 225/75R16 and the 265/75 option. Bigger tyres use a lot more fuel.

bigger tyres use a lot more is a bit of a myth. Bigger tyres cover bigger distance, the only time its an issue is up hill, you have to change down a gear but you are covering a bigger distance for higher revs. I doubt the difference would be that huge. Anyhow for 60k I would find a nice second hand 463.
Mercs own figures show
225/75R16 Town 14.1 Rural 9.8 Combined 11.4 L / 100km CO2 299g
265/75R16 Town 16.2 Rural 11.3 Combined 13.5 L / 100km CO2 354g
By the way... any photos??? ;)

Merc, ha, what do they know, they put a 2010 engine in a 1979 car :?
Now theres progress!!!
They'll be putting a cart horse in front next!! (but it will still be quicker than howard's truck though) lol
If I fed my horse a chip, it wound be quicker than howards chipped g !
If you fed your horse some oats it would be nitrous !! lol

You clearly haven't had your oats tonight or you wouldn't still be up.

yea, on holiday your in bed by 8:30!, had 110mph out of my lsndcruiser last night, whilst returning an average of 28 mpg, more than howards g could ever do.

Mr Party 24 hrs - Mr Perfect is so hard core!
(this was taken at his last party!)

Interesting feedback. Thank you.
The fuel consumption figures I've come across for the PUR are different for the two tyre sizes:
225/75R16 - combined average 11.4L/100km [24.8mpg]; urban 14.1L/100km [20.0mpg]; extra-urban 9.8L/100km [28.8mpg].
265/75R16 - combined average 13.3L/100km [20.9mpg]; urban 16.2L/100km [17.4mpg]; extra-urban 11.3L/100km [25.0mpg].
Might the engine rpm' have been higher in the 280 CDi at 120km/h?
The final drive ratio is 4.375:1 for the 225/75R16' and 4.857:1 for the 265/75R16' and this is likely the important factor here. 4.857:1 great for off-road crawling, but less so for highway cruising.
Post some piccys of your mates pur if you can
I can see yours behind!!
ooooooooooh NOOOOOOO!!!! Should have stayed for a little longer!!! I would love to see that!!
Yeah... the drive back was good, drove rather . . . slowly! 3700-3800rpm... 60L of Diesel for 561km! not bad!
Thanks for the lunch!! Have a nice Sunday :)
the pur originally came with the small wheels and long axles.
Now it has 235/85/16 32" mud's
so it makes low rpm's about 3000rpm @ 140 km/h
the 270 is geared about the same as this setup.
So no difference here. The pur had only 900km on the odo when we left.
Maybe it's not "loose" yet?
