Hi,

I am planning to export one of my G's (ooh that sounds posh!) to Holland.
The plan is complicated but doable I think. I will drive my blue offroad G up North to play for the weekend, my red G (1983 300GD, SWB 4-speed) is the one I want to export, that one is parked up North with my trailer.

So, drive the blue one up, play, put blue one one trailer and tow it with the red one to Holland, then drive blue g back to England.

Question is, do you think this is doable or won't the red G have enough power to do this safely? It will be downhill most of the way (Leeds to Hull) and Holland is very flat.........
I guess total towing weight will be about 3 tonnes.

Opinions?

Many thanks

Richard

Why don't you just drive the red one to Holland and fly back?

FWIW I have towed a trailer with a sprinter van on without much trouble with the 230 and have towed the 240 softtop with the 230 using an 'A' frame.

i'm with chris on this one.

chris, you ae right, the 230 is a great little engine, i am more than impresed with its ability to tow. and you are running on the 35 coopers still?

I know that would seem to be the sensible option but that would leave the blue one up North and me down South. So it all works out rather nicely that the blue one can take me back where I started from plus by the time iv'e paid for flights and a taxi to my house I will be poor!

Cheers!!

Richard

Well, time for a quick update: yes a 300GD can tow 3.5 tonnes, SLOWLY!

On a dead level it will hit 55 mph, any incline and I was down to 3rd and 40 mph. Was very stable tough, quite pleased with the old girl bearing in mind she hasn't done anything for the last 5 years or so. 5 miles between MOT's this and last year, what a waste!

out of interest how did the front end feel? was it too light or ok? i've a lwb and have always been amazed how well she tows - again the 3l petrol isn't the torquiest engine, but the car always feels stable. ph (p.s. well done on the monster tow by the way!)

Front end felt a 'bit' light but then again it always feels light until I realised it had 4 bar of pressure in the front tyres which is far too much. It was ok, wouldn't want to do it on a regular basis though, it really does need a bit more power.
Now where did I put my spare 617a.................

Be very careful with towing weights. It ain't so much what the vehicle is able to pull, it's more about what it can control and stop. But mainly, it's what the manufacturer limits it to on the specification plate. Do not exceed the quoted Gross Train Weight, because if you look overloaded as you drive along and the law stop you, they will check the plate. Whilst I'm sure a lwb G could pull 3.5 tonnes, it is actually limited to 2.8 tonnes, the figure recommended by MB. As I understand it, they are even hotter on this on the Continent than they are in UK, particularly if something goes awry. :(

Please be careful.
