Driving lights
Had to get through 4 feet deep water, now my one driving lamp doesn't work, and I can't get the thing open to change the bulb. Any advise, or is it just an awkward job?
This is why I hate deep water, always something!

I think he might be refering to the lower fog lights which I think have to be accessed from behind the bumper.
Mine are both full of water and would make a good place to keep Goldfish.
Hi Oh thats easy!!! the bumper/lamp surround comes off by removing two star head screws in the upper frame ..this exposes the lamp and four star head screws holding the lamp face to the body..the lense and reflector/bulb come away as one unit with a length of clear plastic breather pipe.the reflectors are not handed but the lenses are..new lamps are GBP 43.20 from MB or GBP 32 from Hella... you can clean and reseal the lenses but if the reflectors are corroded then its new lamps....
Thanks Peter, now, do you have any ideas of how to keep water out?
Yes that would be very useful. One of my favourite jaunts takes me a few hundred yards upstream and after replacing the foglamp bulbs several times I have given up. The lamps are water resistant but don't seem to like being emersed for any length of time.
I don't really use the fog lamps but like everything else on a G, you always feel better when you know it works.
No Photos of G in river so here's a pretty one of a frozen loch.
Hi Christo take the reflector out of the lense body ..wash body "not reflector" thoroughly..dry thoroughly.... apply a shallow layer of tigerseal around the outer edge of the plastic and glass after removing the dead sealant ..let dry... fill with water and stand on newspaper ( to check for leaks)..remove the seal that fits between the body of the housing still screwed to the bumper and smear with petroleum (Vaseline) jelly...re istal and make sure that the plastic vent pipe is nipped up tight in the fitting and pointing vertically....trying to clean the reflector with anything other than white spirit and cotton wool will scratch it...there is a beam height adjuster screw in one corner to tweak before you put the bumper trim back on.... bit like wiper spindles need to repeat this action regularly.....
Yes, I am referring to the lower fog lamps. If yours are still full of water, I take it it is just a b1*ch to do.
Or just invest a little more and go for the new-style oval ones, they are much better sealed and with no ventilation pipe. Also much better sideways light pattern.
That looks like a very good idea.
I’ve often pondered if it’s possible to change these for driving lamps to augment high beam?
Normal high beam is pretty pathetic and I’ve never used the front fog lamps so I won't miss them.
Anyone got some ideas?
Thanks,
Russ
I did on my 460, simply add a relay. I would rather go for new lights thoug, these are rubbish.
Thats what I'm saying Christo, these are rubbish as fog lights and no use as driving lamps either.
Russ
They look nice - do they come for 463's? - Mine are like gold fish bowls at the moment!

Hey M2 i really like your new lamps!! Glad I saw them i real-life :)
Spider - yes they are standard on all 463s from mid-2007 onwards, but need some surgery on old bumpers to fit, nothing a blacksmith can't do.
lphong - it was good to show them in person to someone who appreciates such things - I'll get back to your email shortly, haven't forgotten.
