hi,
i was just wondering if there was a turbo for the 300GD engine. If so is it possible to get hold of one new or used, and has anyone done a conversion.
I am running the manual 5-speed gearbox btw.

thx

Re turbo for 300GD

The reason for the humorous and unhelpful comment added below your request is that the 300GD is known by everyone (except us newbies) to be a "slow old bus" (eighty eight break horse powe when newr) - I know because I foolishly bought one ... I then went to TB turbos in Lancashire who fitted me a turbo costing £2,000 and now some months later I'm stripping off the head because the head gasket has probably blown and it's smoking on me after a run down the A1.

On removing the injector from pot no. four I found there is a load of carbon inside which tells me that one of the rings has probably gone or a valve and my thoughts are that pot number four may have been faulty for a long time. If this is the case, any professional fitters of turbos should have said to me "We can't fit the turbo till you've sorted out No 4 cylinder" - on the other hand I should have had it tested first as Bill Moss advised, so I'm equally to blame.

I think all the above is called "learning by experience" or something to do with "a fool and his money" !

In short, yes you can get a turbo fitted by TB Turbos but you need a compression test done first by your local garage.

Turbo

Not only a compression test but a leak down test and an oil pressure test. Even then IMO there is only one way to turbo a 300 gd and that is with MBs original turbo diesel the 617a.

I wouldn't say it was slow, as it will drive at 80mph all day long until the cows come home, the only real problem are hills really. Thank for the posts tho, but for the cost and what you get out of it i am not sure that it is really worth installin a turbo anymore

Turbos

With the proper set up, a 617a in a G is awsome,

Bill,
Re your post above, despite my purchase of 290GD VAN as a replacment for 300GD, Senior Managment is being very reluctant to sell "HER" car, and since it is currenttly "SORN"ed would it make any sense to take the time to fit a 617a engine instead of continuing to look for a RHD LWB Diesel 463 , @ A SENSIBLE PRICE i HASTEN TO ADD.
Am I right that fitting a 617a engine will nessitate an auto. box, I was wanting to go Auto anyway.

617a

No Marcus you can only fit a manual box in a G if you go to 617a, I have recently sold my converted 300 tdi with a 5spd manual and contrary to many opinions the modified gearbox I fitted is fine.
I am currently working on fitting a 617a with military box, thats 5 spd with exceptional low 1st gear the remaining 4 are the same as a 5 spd ,the box and engine have been successfuly mated, I am now working out the linkage.
The linkage exactly for the job is a from a wolf, but they are like donkey brains, Could go to cable, there are many off the shelf systems for motorsport I am currently examining that option.
The other option is a 6 cyl turbo diesel engine from a 463 but I am still trying to find a spare gear box, when I do I may convert the BRIXMIS 230 I have.

Bill,
Does that mean that 617a engine is a straight swap for existing 617 -- if existing 5 speed manual box retained -- except for exhaust modifications due to turbo, is there an intercooler?
Is this still a mech. controlled in-line FIP bty?
How many hours estimated for work -- best case / worst case ? -- allowing for an experienced Ex MB mechanic familar with "G"s --- well he mentains & MOT's them locally -- & correctly advised running SWB through MOT as she was :D :D :D

617a

Its a straight swop and takes a very long weekend if you have all the bits at hand and a spare 300 to rob bits you find you need but getting all the bits together is the big task, its hard to find a 617a with a fly wheel so you have to have your old engine as the donor and bits of silicone pipe and a made up air box for the filter, if you have no air con a turbo is easier to fit in fron t of the main rad.
