I have the opportunity to buy a fully standard mint very low milage 290td auto.
Whats it like to live with....is it a little quicker than the 300d?
It seems to be the ultimate basis for an overland vehicle?
Can anyone find out what rpm the engine does in top gear at 120km/h?
thank you!

Re: 290 td

Hi Looks and rides like a 460 series G' ..has only one difflock. auto G'box robs the OM 602 DE 29 engine of some torque...get the same performance/economy from an OM 617A 951/2 engine.. 461 series uses the same Auto G'box (with a W124 torque converter).as the 460 280GE... rare so pricey...

I love them, and the engine can be tweaked. It is the sprinter engine, and they go like something nasty off a shovel.

That is the only car I would change mine for. Spider can even keep his wood and leather.

Re: 290 td

The car I have my eye on is an ex mountain rescue vehicle from bavaria germany. It has been pampered (like a fire truck), and is fully original. It has only about 60000 miles with full MB service history.
There are NO options on this car, just a tow hitch, jump seats and central locking.
I love its old school appearance, simple mechanics and I just adore the colors on this one (very 1978!!!)
If I buy this one, I'll put 236/85/16 mud terrains on it, fit a snorkel, a cb and an auxilliary battery system...ready for the job!
It's a little expensive! about 18k...
What do you guys think?

Would this engine cope with a little chip tuning?
For 300 € they remap it to 140 hp@ 3600 rpm and 360nm torque @ 1800rpm
that sound just right.
or would it compromise the engine's reliability a lot?

btw, christo...can you PM me your email?

thx,

G

From the pic of the rear it looks as though the front seats have side supports like the recaro interior which means that you might be able to retro-fit an armrest. A better picture of the front seats would help though.

I like it, looks to be in tip-top condition.

Re: 290 td

Hi what year was it built ?? my understanding is that the 1991 -2-3 models had the early engine that was not equipped with the electronic fuel management... so no chipping!!! the ex Max G' recently offered for sale on GWOA has only the front difflock fitted according to the Build specification!!! .....the washable floor covering came with the early models as did the later 460 series interior cloth used on the seats and door cards....

Re: 290 td

Hi 1998-2001 seems to be the 461TD production platform using the "sprinter" engine..Chipping it is possible but the torque converter p/n 1243501602 may not absorb the extra power and the old style 460 series 4 speed Auto G' box could suffer accordingly...the 5 speed manual "Getrag" G'box in the 460 series suffers from the extra torque generated by the OM 617A turbo diesel engine... from experience!!!

Re: 290 td

I would comment that I have always found the performance of our 1998/1999 van "adequet" as in exactly that, Rolls Royce adequet that is.
I am never looking for more oomph when driving it.
And tank in tank out 24.something mpg, never 23 never 25. Honest
boys used to 5 litre petrol toys could well have a different perspective on the performance however.

Re: 290 td

Did you really mean 80 mph  Or kmh
I dont go there that often. But she will certainly whiz up to 70 plus with ease
Since it is Senior Managments motor I only drive it occasionally, and from what I recall ....No bugger, I had better check.
The gearbox is playing up again ( flaring) so I do not know that I would reley on what figs I would be quoting.
cheers

Re: 290 td

very nice G mate ! i love the colour scheme. that engine is great. i actually had a 230G from turkey over at my place last week that sprinter engine/gearbox fitted. the conversion was done unbelievably well inc all wiring looms, electronic pump and even the electronic gas pedal. i drove it to the port and was SHOCKED at how quick it was. it was chipped too in istanbul. you can't go wrong with this G easydelux.

Re: 290 td

When you look into the 461 in detail there are many improvements from the earlier 460 model

1. Plastic fuel tank as fitted to the 463
2. The front seat are the same as the 463 so to allow for the heated seat option available in the 463 range.
3. The wiring loom is the very much the same as installed in the 463 with the fuse board being installed under the passenger side dash area using plate rather than the old bullet type fuses as used in the earlier 460 model.
4. The gearbox is the 722.3 box from the early 463 range and not the old 460 720.1 box.
5. From 1999 rear discs replaced the conventional drums (except for chassis cab or military models)
6. An oil cooler was fitted to the traditional L7 steering box.
7. The heating system is pre plumbed for the ancillary heater should you wish to install retrospectively.
8. A third brake light was installed to comply with the later regulations

There isn’t an intercooler on the Td but a charge air system. The intercooler is basically an additional radiator but instead of cooling water it cools the air pushed through by the turbo. Hence the bigger the intercooler quite often the cooler the air which as many of you boffins will know does not compress as much as worm air hence bigger bang in the bore. Simple.

So why a charge air system and not an intercooler. Well the charge air is again a radiator which like the engine radiator cools water. This time the water intern cools a water jacket around the inlet to coo the air. Are you still with me .. The advantage being it cools the air better at low speeds giving the G more power off road. The intercooler is better at high road speeds where there is a greater air flow. Some of you may have noticed your turbo diesels perform better in the cold weather.

So coming back to the 290, yep loads of the right stuff for low speeds.

I would agree the power could be described as adequate. Slow thought to mid range speeds, say up to 60mph are fine but it becomes a bit lazy through to around the 80-90 mark, although I must add this is with the slightly larger 265/75/16 tyres. But it should be remembered that the equivalent size tyre was available as an option on the 461.

As for having a chip or re map well I spoke with ORC our German parts friends who used chipped 290s as support vehicles for there race team, they said it made a lot of difference didn’t experience any premature parts failure as a result.

In summery they are good trucks but as with our women, as new better models come on the seen you need to give a bit of a whipping to keep up the pace.

Alternatively you could look at 463s and ignore all I have said, and talk about broad loom carpets, and decide if you would prefer twisted pile or smooth 50/50 nylon mix with whipped edges to contrast the seat stitching. I know which one I would choose…

Re: 290 td

Sorry but I don’t understand the point your trying to make. The gearbox in the silver G was changed as the truck had been left in the hands of a Merc dealer and not with somebody who understands vehicles.

Both Merc Newcastle and Coldstraem were not prepared to look any further than a simple diagnosis into the the problem and simple opted for the easy route of changing the box. Good old Merc UK

Re: 290 td

I know 3 chipped 290td's. They are all being used on and off road a lot, all have more than 100 000 km's on the clock and no problems with the chipping. They have however all fitted a different water pump to cope with highways in Africa heat. It is simple and cheap, but I don't think you are going to drive at 140km/h for hours on end, so you wouldn't need it.

Standard I think the 461 is close to the 463, but possibly a bit livelier at lower revs, but chipped it becomes an up to date car, more like a chipped td5.

no id say lack of an oil change, I took Howards advice years ago and change the tranny oil every 25,000. all this sealed for life and longer life oil is bollocks, garages never change tranny oil unless you tell them to. I abused my autobox in my 280 offroading, and prior to that howard did, but howard had looked after it!. Howard is right, take it to mercs, needs new box sir, take it to an autobox specialist, they diagnose and pressure test, and sometimes it can be the pump, or filter change, so no no a coincidence in my mind, just merc stealers

yes and I think they are still trying too. Sorry for the thread jack, but my gearstick is stiff and will now no longer go to 4,3,2,1

They are saying the 'bush's are fine its some corrosion on the 'ojemaflip' (?). In realty they recon some mud and stuff has worked its way up and past and that's whats causing the problems -they are taking a longer look on the 6th to determine what the problem is.

*sigh* maybe after this I can get it back to working order...

BTW Easy - I do like the new G - one could really go to town and 'trigg' it up. Maybe see the finished article at the next Bala?

Easy, I've never seen such a mint 461 for sale.

If you can secure it for that amount of cash go for it.

Just for the record, 461s have either the rear diff lock or both the front and the rear (the rear was standard, the front optional).

They don't need the central one 'cause there isn't any differential there: the VG80 transferbox is rear wheel drive with conectable front axle so no diff there.

Cheers

Re: 290 td

BUMMER!

Today I drove 800km to some god forsaken place in Germany to watch the 290 in the flesh...

On the phone the seller used nothing but terms like "mint" "collectors" "unique" and "perfect" The pictures backed this story, so I went...

When I got there it was a well camouflaged well used 461.
-it was fully repainted, but without removing trim and windows.
-the wheels were repainted, but they repainted over the valves and even the wheelnuts.
-the dash (that's why there was no picture of it) was full of holes etc... from removed equipment.
-interior was not mint and in places worn and patched, the pictures were taken from "clever" angles.

But whats even more amazing is that after I made an appointment with this guy,
and I drove 800km to possible buy a second hand car... HE WOULD NOT LET ME TEST DRIVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I felt like kicking him on the nose! I said my stuff and drove home very frustrated @ 220km/h. (to relieve stress).

This guy was some board member of german G club too
way to support your community

This looks good, but if you don't mind slightly higher milage: http://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/showDetails.html?lang=de&id=128321370&...

I am quite tempted by the silver one, will go and have a look at it soon.
