My battery is dud, defunct, devoid of power, in fact, dead.

No problem thinks I, just check on one of the very helpful auto electrical sites, input model details blah blah and output battery recommendations.

Except that, all the recommendations are for batteries that simply will not fit. They are all 353 in length and my tray (in a 1991 463 300GES) is significantly smaller.

I don't want to replace with the same as I currently have as it is cr@p, so the question is, is there a small but reasonable power battery that will fit and doesn't cost the earth. Approx 100 squids should be about enough methinks.

Thanks.

1991 300GE here too, got mine from Halfords, less than £100 if I remember correctly, has lasted 2 years so far if I remember right.

What makes your old battery rubbish? Other than it being old of course..

Re: Battery size...help

Halford batteries did very well in a Auto Express test, but the recomended one don't fit...

It won't hold a charge. I keep recharging it and the best it'll held for was three days. Last time it went in 24hrs. I've had a new Becker and a Clifford system fitted which will drain a bit more, but not to the extent it is, and in any case the problem stated a couple of weeks after the Clifford was fitted, so I'm pretty sure that's not the cause.

Do you have the number of the Haford battery you bought?

Thanks.

Re: Battery size...help

I've installed Exide S106-EA1000 last autumn.
Direct fit with size 353X175X190mm.

How good it is? Experience beginning November last year(not too long tough):
At least it survived month of idle at -15...-20 Celsius. I tried to start the car at -20C. Cranked it few minutes, nothing. Cranking was hard and slow, I guess the reason was oil 10W40, not suitable for such a cold weather.
After it was warmer, around -10C, it started immediately, there was plenty of charge left after weeks of cold weather plus minutes of unsuccessful cranking attempts.
How long does it serve me, don't know. Let's see.

There was Bosch silver A8 installed before. According to the manufacturing dates on the battery it served almost 10 years. Respect to Bosch.
Didn't buy a Bosch because it was two times more expensive than Exide. I can buy Exide every five years. ;-)

I just looked up the receipt, was on offer for £79.99 and installed in January 2007 (Halfords Leicester), still surviving to this day, four year guarantee. Number HCB096. If I recall correctly I had to remove some of the plastic bits at the base of the battery for it to fit in the holder - at first I thought it was the wrong size too, but then figured out they put the plastic removable bits in for a universal fit, but you'll have to remove them for the tray in ours.

-updated- link to website of my battery that fits:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_...

Though when you use their battery selector and input G-wagen they give you a bigger one, not sure why, but the catalogue they had in store in 2007 was more accurate than the website.

I'd echo stevo's advice - only go to Halfords as a last resort (I was desperate), you can often get better value and decent quality at Partco/Unipart:

The standard battery is a UK type 096. The length is 278mm. The LHD will take the 350mm one but not rhd.
