Hi All. My G500 (with the twin spark W140-type 5litre V8) is in the final ferlon to prepare it for another trip. The last thing that needs to be done is to fit an engine oil pressure gauge, my problem is that apparently there is isn't a normal sender place around the engine (the oil pressure guage and oil quality meter is inside the sump...or so I'm told). That leaves only the option of putting it in the traditional place, i.e. the filter housing. My question is, has anyone ever tried this? If so, could you tell me where the hole should be drilled for the sender unit (I'm using an electrical VDO sender/gauge, not a pitot-tube type). Better still, could you post a pic of it please. Thanks in advance for input/ph

Re: Oil Pressure Gauge

The oil sensor is indeed in the sump and it measures temp, quality and level. There is no provision for the pressure to be measured anywhere on the engine. The designers decided that pressure is so reliable it doesn't warrant monitoring any more. I can not suggest a place to tap into and don't advise it. There is a heat exchanger next to the oil filter housing which would be the least worse location, but you could end up making a mess of it

Re: Oil Pressure Gauge

thanks roly, am I just a dinosaur by still wanting to see what the oil pressure is? my reasoning is, as usual, a hard-learned lesson: I once had a mini............long story........engine oil pressure lamp failed, engine seized on me. many tears, sweat and £££s to rebuild engine AND box of course as they share the same oil. Ever since then, I always install an oil pressure gauge in my cars - never seized an engine since, REALLY don't want the V8 to be my second. Anybody else do this or is this just a hang up I have from my rover days? ph
