Not much sign of Overland Bling, not a winch, lift or oversized wheel/tyre in sight. How on earth does he manage? :D

Good find Russ,
though he did get his rims widened to take (I think) 265x75x16 tyres
and red springs all round.
Now where do we get that cheaper road tax
I like the covers over the electric window switches

He knows desert terrain! His experience allows him to anticipate trouble ... and, laterally he's had a vehicle with diff-locks to get him out of the difficulties he has driven into. Of overriding importance, which you will get from reading "Quiet for a Tuesday", is that he has patience. How many of us, if we got stuck in the sand alone in some remote desert, would think of sleeping on it and waiting for the sand to harden overnight after cooling? Then reverse out the following morning.
I really like the look of his bespoke wheel claw adaptor that allows for jacking up of a [steel] wheel with the bottle jack supplied with the G. There are two photo' of this at

It means you don't have to go crawling underneath to get at the axle. It would probably make a dent or two on an alloy rim though. I've searched the www to see if there is anything like that available to buy, but as yet haven't found anything.

Amazing eye sight there Chris
Nice idea, my switches certainly don’t like dust/grit
Russ
Yeh been there and done that in a snow blizzard (in my old 123)
I see that Tom has a new book coming out in the Summer - "The Nobility of Wilderness - Travels in Algeria" - a must buy.
If I could get hold of his e-mail address I would ask him where he got the Wheel Claw Adaptor made up? Anyone have it? Send me a PM.
Rick,
ref your last, i would also be very interested as matt savage's website has the one with the fabrick hooks only.
anyone know where this thing came from?
thanks in advance/ph
I found Tom's address and sent him an e-mail earlier today; had a long reply from him this evening.
The wheel claw adaptor is a diy job made from 13mm bar covered with plastic hose! Although the design is generic, the device is best made up to suit whatever particular wheel you've got. His suggestion, a trip to a local blacksmith. Tom made a mock-up using an aluminium bar then took if to his local agricultural blacksmith to manufacture the steel version.
dentsmithy, the electric window covers are not covers as such, but 10mm surrounds to prevent accidental activation of the switch and battery drain by various stuff in the cab that might rest on it. He reports that before a trip a water bottle resting on the switch overnight drained the battery down to 5V the following morning. So, the Germans don't think of everything!
Again, I can't recommend "Quiet, for a Tuesday" highly enough. The photographs alone are superb.

Here's two photo' from Tom showing detail of the surrounds -
I have 461 rims on my 463 ( 6" wide as opposed to 5.5) I assume his has those, i thought 235 tyres on his? Either way, it looks a lovely motor!
