Tyre change - any recommendations?
Hi everyone,
Few questions for you regarding tyres.
My G is big standard at the minute so runs the 5.5 x 16 steel wheels with no arch extensions. Am happy to leave it that way for the time being (as I climb the off-road learning curve I want to stay within limits of stock spec), but this week I am going to change the tyres.
My first question is size: I know some people say go 235/16 on the 6inch wheels - what about the 5.5 inchers? I am thinking 215 or 225/75 Kumho MT's, anyone else using these? I run Kumhos on a few other cars and have to say I love them. Have read some people complaining of slippiness in the wet on Kumho road tyres, not experienced that myself even on the track and I promise you I do not hang about. Any Kumho-using G owners who can provide feedback? That would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
I run Kuhmo 31.10.5x15 AT tyres on my SWB 280GE and found them to be an excellent allround tyre, I was surprised when I received them how aggresive the tread pattern was for an AT tyre, but they've proved to give excellent on road grip even on wet roads. Off road because of thier open tread pattern they really dig in on grass and mud. I paid £50 each for these tyres from Nene valley 4x4 very pleased.
Thanks for the great write up john, you get the fiver next visit
It would be intereresting to try that spare set of scorpions I have on rims when you come over to Dav off road next time.

Its nice to see someone making alot of effort letting us know what you are doing. Would it be possible to copy everything down on cd for me to include in the various g-wizz magazines as not everyone has internet in the club and it makes good reading for the members. I have received the cd thanks. Next colour mag is in March.
Deep joy :P
Its always difficult to get content for a club mag. You either have to source it yourself or get the odd members letter. Having this forum is great because you can rob alot of things off it. But every so often a very keen person like yourself comes along. And this makes good reading for members that do not have access or wish to have acces to this forum.
I have scoured thorugh the american site and will use some bits off his site. But at the moment I am only doing one magazine a year the other 3 are done by the clubs editor. As mine is in colour and 16 pages I like to make the most of it.
Did you get the copy of G wizz I sent you???
OK, having sorted the insurance out with Roadsure (see post in 'Chat') took the G down to my regular tyre fitter at Just Tyres in Daventry today and had him look at the truck's rubber.
He all but flat refused to change the fronts, insisting that there was nothing wrong with them and that they were perfect for starting on the nursery slopes of 4x4-dom, so took his (as always) solid advice and left them on there.
One rear and the spare were utterly kaput though so they had to come off. As I said I was after the Kumho 834, he doesn't stock Kumho but had the identical Marshal 834 on the shelf, so had two of those fitted in 205/80 R16, same size as already on there. The tyres were £120 all in. This was a great price, cheapest I could find elsewhere was blackcircles.com who would send them to me at £55 each, but that was plus fitting.
I am happy enough with what's on there now as it will allow me to start small and move on to bigger things as my ability (hopefully) increases, and I think it will be really interesting to get a real feel for what the G can do in standard form before I start looking at big modifications.
I was pretty pleased with the morning's work so drove off to get a cup of tea and a bacon roll in celebration. Ended up at the sarnie van at the bottom of Bill Moss's road, so tried my hand on the door of his unit and lo and behold the man himself was home. What a professional set-up, and the cleanest garage I have ever been in! So good did everything look in fact that if I haven't sorted it beforehand, I will be taking ORL over to Bill in mid-January to have her seized front diff lock actuator dealt with, with the relative luxury of a ramp and a roof. 8)
