I think 2.5 turbo on old generation engines otherwise you are into sprinter 2.3 with electronics and the bell housing will be the wrong way.

Re: engine downsizing????

you could fit a om 616 out of a 307 van its a four cylinder version of what you have now turbo ones are very rare although I have heard somthing about Tata buying the licence and fitting that engine with a turbo in India it would be interesting to see if the pistons out of a 617a would fit a 616 with piston cooling. anyway I think the non turbo 616 is about 66 hp and 2.4 litre good look

Ned

You could fit either the 2.4 ltr OM616 engine at a massive 64 bhp or if that sort of silly power just scares you there is the more pedestrian 2.0ltr version OM615 at a sensible 56 bhp . Both versions fitted to the w123 range in the 70s and early 80s .I have driven all the merc range from early 70s to 90s and the 200Ds and 240Ds where possible the slowest mode of transport ever , so , the engines will fit, and will last and last , but will need too as it will be faster walking. :(

Re: engine downsizing????

18 months later.... between building house, two babies and minding cows had to pass the job onto a fabricator.. 2 L turbo engine and box out of 190 1988 car and an intercoller out of an a4 going into the g and doing proper job on the rust, everyone thinks i'm mad spending 2500 euro on a 23 yr old car so positive feedback only please :) pictures to follow..

Re: engine downsizing????

Ned, as Eamon Dunphy would say, This is a Good idea, Not a great idea.
Have a look at this conversion for A VW TDI powered jeep. Now thats a Great Idea. Nice 1.9 TDI engine (low road tax), available everywhere. Loads of HP, Loads of Torque etc etc

www.hpamotorsport.com/tdijeep.htm

We need to start thinking out of the MB Box into other engine types, come up with a standard conversion model and proliferate....surely we have the technical know how to do this.

Re: engine downsizing????

Good luck with the conversion...I've come a little late to this thread...my thoughts are you dont need mb power.would be better off with a 1.9 or  2 litre TD.engine + box ,much easier than conversion plate...nissan vanette comes to mind..merc 3 rod shift is adaptable ,VW 1.9 from rwd donor ,that route wd also save kilos.
There is a lovely mb derived ssangyong/daewoo turbo 308 4 cylinder widely used in africa and the far east ,hard/impossible to source in europe which would be great in a swb with newer type g/box..
PS Jap immobilisor pumps can easily be butchered to 100% mechanical

Re: engine downsizing????

Can I ask are the A4's you refer to Audi A4 seats. If so have you confirmed that they fit. I ask as I am looking for new seats for my 91 463.

Thanks
