Guys,

In the last fiew days my power steering has been very loud only when cold. It sounds like the motor is straining. There has been a small oil leak fom what i think is the steering box. I went to top up the oil with slick 50 but I could not see a resevoir for the power steering. I had a look at the maintenance manual but i could not see the parts depicted in section 4611. Help please!

Ian

Re: Loud Steering

Hi Ian the power steering will squeal when low on oil...the reservoir is located to the right of the engine just back from the radiator and has a pulley on the front integral with the belt driving the fan and alternator...look for a round domed metal cap 10cm across with a black castellated knob in the centre ..wipe the muck of the cap and turn the knob anti clockwise.. the cap will rise off the reservoir as you screw the knob off....the oil could be damaged by the heat generated because it has run low and it would be best to drain and replenish with new oil (ATF or Dexron II) just top it up until you can get it flushed..the sooner the better....

Power steering reservoir is that cylinder-shaped thingy you see bottom-right of this picture with the little black top that you have to unscrew counterclockwise to open it:
