Can you answer my questions? w460 300GD
Hi, I'm new to this forum so please bear with me if I'm asking very obvious questions.. I just bought a lovely G-Wagen W460 300GD, Manual, 5-speed, 28,000 miles on the clock, amazing condition throughout, and I have a few questions...
1) What sort of MPG should I (realistically) be getting on this car if I'm driving mostly around town at average speeds?
2) Does anyone else feel like the gearstick is annoyingly far away? I have very long arms as I'm 6ft 6" and still feels like its a good few inches to far, and too low - I am considering getting some kind of custom extension which would bring it nearer to me.
3) How / Where can I get side steps for the car?
4) If I want to lower the car a bit, is this a big job? Do I just get some new, shorter springs?
5) Is it at all possible to convert this car to an Automatic gearbox, and if so, is it a big job?
Any help, on any of the above questions would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks a lot. B
P.S. Here's the car..

1) in london - low 20s or high teens depending on when you drive!
2) driving position in a G tends to be with the seat a lot closer to the wheel than how you would drive a sedan - i'm 5'9 and never had any problems reaching the stick
3) try a search on here as there are a few different types depending on what you want... oem ones will be ridiculously expensive...
4) ... no idea... why would you want to lower it? someone else asked this but never got an answer if i recall
5) not overly difficult - depends on your skill level but you will need to find the parts...
1) i have a 230GE and the consumption is 25L/100klm in the city and 15L/100klm out of the city
2) too far in the city but ok when offroading...!
3) ebay or custom.
4)lower it?
cut the springs... ...thow i dont know if it is a good idea... this car is ment to be high and usually 'we' tend to higher it more!
sorry fo the 'we'!
leave it as it is, you will get used to it...
5) touching the gear box is expensive in working hours although you can find a decent gearbox with 150 pounds.
Sorry don't really know enough to comment in either case... maybe pistonhead will chime in as he should know...
If you unscrew the gear knob you will find it is just an M8 or M10 thread so you could just make up a bar to suit
3. I noticed today when I was hunting for a door lock controller that Euromerc had a set of side steps.
side steps for the G are all over ebay
Hi there. G looks nice, I like that colour. Is it genuine 28k miles?
1. As Maxwell says - low 20's is doing well.
2. 'Bushcraft' put an extension on his for the same reason. http://www.gwoa.co.uk/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=8311&highli...
3. Sidesteps on ebay.
4. No idea, but why? If you're G really is lovely with only 28k, don't mess!
5. As above. Also, 460 300GD auto's are - I believe - the slowest of the slow and the auto box won't help your fuel economy (probably won't hurt it much either though!).
All the best.
Tom
Euromercs are cheaper than ebay....

Thanks very much Maxwell. Just a few more questions if you can bear it!
2) That might be my problem, I'm 6ft 7", it feels a long way away from me as I can't get that close to the steering wheel (damn legs), which leads me to two options:
- get some kind of custom gear stick extension which raises it, angles towards me and back, and attach it to the original one!?!?
- go for automatic conversion - I would really like to do this - but don't have the technical know how at all, I just want to know how long it might take a mechanic to do it, and how much I might have to spend on parts..
Any thoughts on the above?
Thanks again.
