Help and advice please.

The steering on my 230 GES has been getting stiff and does no self centre.
It is worse on a cold morning.

I have lubricated the u j's on the steering column and this has helped almost normal if weather is warm (above freezing!!) but the stiffness returns after a few days.

In all other respects steering is good - tracks true no play no wobbles.

Any ideas and cures.

thanks in antisipation

Re: Stiff steering

Hi Jack the front of the G off the ground ..rotate steering wheel fully left and right with engine running.. in noticeably stiff could be dry bearings in the boss under the steering wheel or dry swivel bearings in the hubs or no grease in the hubs...or contaminated oil in the power steering or a partially siezed steering damper ram......

Re: Stiff steering

Many thanks Fixwin38

I am going to get the power steering fluid changed first - it may be 22 years old and is the only fluid that has not been changed on the car. If no better will move on to the other suggestions.

What fluid do you recommend is there a filter and are any special tools needed?

PS The new fuel filter improved the starting no end on the M103

Re: Stiff steering

Could it be as simple as the p/s belt slipping? Mines been playing up a bit since the trip to the Plain after Christmas. Definately worse in the cold too.

Re: Stiff steering

An update to my stiff steering.

I checked everthing as suggested by fixwin (many thanks) and all seemed OK.

I then cleaned the uj's on the steering shaft and greesed them and changed the power steering fluid (could have been 22 years old but looked OK).

Result steering back to normal.
