If you have common w463 vibration problem that usually comes from worn center drive shaft CV joints, you don`t have to dig deep in your wallet. Mercedes G model w463 center drive shaft CV joints are standard GKN or others manufacturer 108mm OD, x32mm 28 splins fit to meny audi/VW, Porche, etc. Only adjustment, CV back cover, 15-30 minutes intervention in any metal-processing (don`t know how it is called in english) workshop.

price,
MB part entire shaft(GKN product) = 1000-1200 eur
my solution, only CV joints(GKN product) = 300 eur

Would be even more useful if you had a title to the thread that said something about the contents

But on a more serious note, there are 2 types of centre prop shafts on the 463, early greasable ones, and later ones that are not user-serviceable or greasable (for people with limited technical knowledge). For the latter, you can get the new bearing and seal kits from MB as well, you don't have to go for a new shaft, but you might have to push for it. How do I know this? Our G500 recently had this problem in Dubai, and the dealer just finds it easier to replace the whole thing, but after showing them the parts on the EPC they agreed to do the bearings even tho it was not normal procedure (just workshop resistance to change I think). If you're talking about the earlier greasable shafts...then I have little experience with them, but I recall some members on Pointedthree.com in the USA have managed to rebuilt the ends, at some cost.

It is the new version non-serviceable. I couldn`t gat originals ends from MB only enire shaft even CV boots, nothing but all shaft. Than I asked my friend mechanic about that dimension CV joint and we found replacement. My old CV boots finished and thing that have to be considered are the new CV boots wich are so soft and must be thightened as strong as you can or it can go out that I suffered twice. Greas was everywhere.
Driving is like on the silk, so soft, amazing diference.
I noticed that the TC is quite hot after one hour driving, is that normal? I add 1/2 liter specifed w80-90 oil.

Sorry Maxwell, I haven’t read your message. On the original GKN box is a number 302287 AUDI/VW and come with the new boots also. Important note, if you replace the CV you must take back old CV boots in correct position to keep the balance of the center shaft. I had replaced one of them with the new one because the old was damaged and spent lot of time to find proper balance. The main reason are the clamps, especially bigger. It runs so fine and smooth now.

Re: Alternative CV Joints

Can you help me understand. This GKN unit directly fits the center shaft or it needs modification to fit? Where can it be purchased online?

Re: Alternative CV Joints

Yes, there is a litle bit of modification but it is simple 15 minutes work for every lathe master. Here is it as inner Audi 100 CV joint.

Boots and clamps you better don't tuoch to keep the original balance.

Re: Alternative CV Joints

Edit
Audi 100 inner CV is 108mm/32, 28 splins shaft.
MB part is also 108mm/32, 28 splins and everythin is the same except one diference, MB CV has the back cover. I prepared back cover seat, this is the modification.

Re: Alternative CV Joints

There is a parallel universe out there:

I suspect this is the mod they are talking about...

Re: Alternative CV Joints

Nice word, parallel universe. Same story. I spent hours thinking how the center shaft problem starts. As you can see on the pictures old CVs are poor greased and grease is like a clay. It's happened probably because of very high rpm and no possibility for maintenance like other two drive shafts. So the shaft became useless at one moment and must be cured. First signal is clanking and vibration.

Re: Alternative CV Joints

Please note to all thread contributors and readers of, that vibration is not necessarily CV joints, there could be other factors involved, bushes, tyres, prop. shafts etc.......  Before you condemn the CV joint, the problem does need diagnoses.
