OK, travelling home this evening, heard a thump and then a rattle, and saw that the nearside wing mirror was hanging by the heating cable.

Pulled over and folded it back and when I got home took a look. It seems what ever I hit, has caused all the little clips to break and the glass will not clip back into the wing mirror itself. Have done a term job, by super gluing the rubber seal to the plastic and then the mirror to the rubber.

The Wing mirror surround looks OK as is the motor and assembly, the glass is also fine, its just the clips that have all seamed to snapped off. (Go figure)

I have been back to where I think things happened to make sure I did not hit a person, and all I can see is a bush that overhangs the road a bit - but nothing solid that could break the clips.

Any advice/ suggestions as to a) what could have happened and b ) does this mean a whole assembly or just a new piece of glass to get the clips???

Bird strike from the hedgerow? Shock shattered the clips because they were particularly cold and brittle that day?

I can only think that is the case. Now comes the fun part, seeing how much this will cost to repair! (When the wife took off the ML wing mirror it was (inc fitting) £420! - I really hope the G is much cheaper!

Someone clipped my nearside wing mirrow while I was parked up. From what you describe that same thing happened. The small clips snapped of the circlular fitment on the back of the mirrow glass, with no damage to the housing or motors. I got a replacement glass from MBUK for £70.

I bought one last year for about £80. Thay come in either flat or aspherical. You can choose. Non repairable plastic clips unfortunately. Think of it as a camping shaving mirror
