Timing Chain Rivets
Just got a price for the timing chain rivet tools. £124/£126 for the two listed. Anyone doing the job with something else?
Andy
i suspect that at some time in its life ,your engine will have already had a timing chain. The timing chain on 102 engines was one of the weak spots. If it has had its chain changed before the replacement chain will have a split link in it which requires no special tools to separate. And even if it has not had a replacement chain in the past, the old chain is easy enough to split without too much agro and the new chain is simply attached to the end of the old chain with the split link and slowly wound around ( keeping tension on both free ends) until the old chain is replaced with the new one. All the above being done after the removal of the tensioner.
You would be supprised how many special tools you can do without

Sorry Andy
The last 102 timing chain i changed, was in 1986 , shows how even Merc can make a simple job more complicated , how can one man get his first post sooooooooo wrong , makes me ashamed to call myself an ex mb mechanic

Thanks Steve, I did go ahead and get the tools. I didn't find a split link but the engine has 100k so must be first time. The split link repair kit has been surpassed by a rivet only repair, hence the need for a rivet pressing tool. My information on replacement came from the WIS.
As I had the timing cover off there was no need to wind the chain, it all worked out fine but now I have an expensive paper weight.
