can a weak seal on the radiator filler cap cause the temperature guage to regularly go towards the red ?

I'll obviously change it if this isthe case...

or is something else playing up.

other than that it runs fine whilst near the red mark and no water loss.

thanks

Re: high temperature on guage

Hi if the coolant system does not pressurise for any reason it will run marginally hotter..if the viscous coupling has failed it will run hot in traffic and on hills. .if the water pump has failed it will run into the red and possibly sieze up.if the radiator is partially blocked it will run hot.....drive until the engine is up to temp ( pointer at around 12,oclock shut off engine and feel radiator core all over ..any cold spots and rad is faulty..at hot the fan should be almost solid to turn by hand unlike when cold when there is limitied resistance...... is the coolant part antifreeze ??
