Hi,

Literally the 1st toe in the water to see if there is interest from this Forum for a social meet, somewhere on the Island?!

A quick scan down the members list shows a fair number of owners, this side of the Irish Sea. I'm sure not everyone can be in a position to travel to the main meet in England, and I thought it could be pleasant for like-minded souls to converse together.

This is in no way proposed as an alternative, just simply a sounding out of feasability.

Cheers for now,

Martin

Sounds good to me. Any of you Brits prepared to travel? Or will it just be for those on our mainland? C'mon it's a great idea. Any takers???

Tom,
During 30 years of name-calling here in N. Ireland, I have only ever heard the term "Brits" used in a negative or derogotory way, as in "Brits out".
But re proposed Irish meeting, I will put my hand up for that, North or South.

Term Brits used in a nice way. We're called Dubs + Culchies in the South. No offence would be intended by me as I love my collegues both sides of the water. I boat in the north and most of my Crew etc are serving Police ! My roots are in Dundalk, a border town but I would consider myself more Northern than Southern. So, chill out..I apologise if I offended anyone.

Meet up... I'd be delighted. I'll travel up north no problem or else entertain my northern collegues in the South. Over to you guys.

Thanks Tom.

Have been conversing with loads re this proposed meeting.

Can you check out Toddsleap.com? It is 1 of the few off-road centres available in the North. The courses can be set as difficult or easy as one wishes.

They also cater for overnight stays, BBQs. clay shooting etc, etc.

Have a look and let me know what you think, wouldn't be hard to smuggle in the odd Guinness or 2!! (I sort of know the owner now)

Cheers for now

Toddsleap looks very interesting as it's really a designer location for off road 'stuff' etc. I am reading the site correctly? I'm sure this venue will attract interest from our English +other members (more politically correct???) I would be interested in travelling up to this beautiful County. I have boated in Lough Erne for a while although the boat is currently in Carrickfergus Marina...see I am really Irish and enjoy both North and South.

The only think that can divert my attention is my young lads football...Sunday mornings. Any chance of making it an end of week job? Anyway, great location and I'll promote it as best I can. Great work lads.

Sounds like a great idea lads, the one LRO mag I read a few months back had an article on wheeling in Eire, fishing, mudplugging, running up the side of the Wicklow Hills/Mountains, etc - all sounded great. We were all over the North in August on hols in our camper & had a ball, could have spent the whole three weeks doing the Bushmills factory tour!

I am back home for Paddy's Day next year but not in the G, wish you luck with the get together.

By the way I understand what Marcus is saying about 'Brits Out' and all that but perhaps it has certain connotations there that it does not elsewhere. More foreign nationals than just us use the term 'Brits'; those from a 'land down under' spring to mind. Never had anyone take offence to my using it over here (not that I use it a lot) other than to say 'I'm not British, I'm English!' (my Mrs favourite one).

G wagen day out for this side!!

Hi All,

Thanks for all your messages on this forum, private messages and personal calls.

Can I now make a Provisional announcement on the Date and Venue?

Proposed to go for the last Saturday in February, the 26th, and to be held at Toddsleap, Ballygawley. Still open to suggestions, but I believe this gives the best mix of activities, facilities and accessability!.

Miles of tracks, beginner, med to professional level off roading - or just come along and share some stories.

Numerous hostelries close by, catering is an option on site as are other activities.

Please drop me a line to gather numbers.

All welcome.

Cheers for now, Martin

meeting

it took a personal message to wake me up to this thread. It is a very interesting idea and one I would like to support but the distance for me is a problem,Limerick,(especially with a 4 speed 300gd and a whiny front axle).
I hope it is a success all the same and that thereby it becomes an annual affair,(or even more frequent),so that future events might within my striking distance.

Sounds great to me. I'll try my utmost to attend and with the work you've put into organising this event I'm sure that even those of us as far as Limerick will be there !

Any idea on numbers yet Martin? How many do you need to make it viable? Lets get this string as much publicity as we can so that those members in Scotland or Northern England will attend. Sure it's only a short boat trip. Any takers???

Good meeting you in Malahide the other week Martin...a small world indeed.

G Wagen meetat Todds leap

Thanks to all that have replied so far.

With regards to numbers, there is no minimum. the more the merrier obviously. If you wish to avail of the full off-road course, there is a set fee per car for all day use including tow outs, (G drivers shouldn't need those!!).It was seriously muddy the last time I attempted it though, so come prepared!

Had envisaged a few hardier soles going for this and the rest simply to get together for the craic, or tackle the easier routes.

Checking out local hosteleries for food, or if numbers are high enough the centre can cater.

Please keep the replies coming in, I've hopefully PM'd all the listed G owners in IrelandN.Ireland. If you know of any other persons interested please make them aware.

This invitation obviously extends to all, and if the Scots|EnglishWelsh make the effort to come across they can be assured of a very warm welcome.

Please check in closer to the event for further details, or PM myself.

Thanks again

Hi Tom,

no real way of gauging interest from "overseas".

Will be placing an ad in the local papers 2 weeks before in an attempt to reach non - GWOA members locally and hoping to get a little press coverage if poss on the day.

Hoping for a reasonable turn out, and reiterate
epeat myour invitation to all like minded souls.

Cheers for now.

Hi Martin,

Just checking out what you have arranged for the day. I am hopeful of attending even for a short while. Do you have a timetable arranged or is it take it as you go?

Hope it is a great day. Of course our Irish weather should make it interesting....don't you think?

A fantastic day was had by all. All exept me, drove on the off road course. I took the easy way out and was a 'guest' of Martin.

All praise must go to Martin for organising an amazing event. Well done. Where were all our 'overseas' collegues ??? You guys missed a Great Irish Event.

Maybe now instead of the title of our pages reading.... ' The place for all online G Discussions in the UK' it should continue....and Ireland.

Well done again Martin.

I'II 2nd that Tom,
I didnt seem to manage to find enough time to both drive the course and spend as much time getting to know you et. al. as I had intended -- and that was after getting there early.
Now have to wash two cars ( in the one day! ) & finally post those photos of the LWB.
Thanks again Martin
And also thanks to owner & staff @ Todds Leap -- a good well-run set-up -- the mud is a bit sticky though -- they need to do sommat about that.

Guys,

Looks like you had a heck of a day!

If anyone has large, good quality electronic pictures of the meet, e-mail them to me. I can have them hosted in the Spanish club website -if the author doesn't mind- and link them to this site.

Just a note to thank martin for a well organised day, it was great to see all the G's in one spot and watch those mad Derry men climb several vertical walls in their SWB. Don't know about anyone else but I heard noises I that should have been coming from under my car both during and aftern the event!!!!!!!! but after a good wash and a few miles all seems to be well!!! Martin your G500 wheels are the biz, just don't leave her parked near Kircubbin or you might find her up on bricks!!!! Nice to meet Tom Baldwin and the others who's names I cant remember(sorry) but look forward to the next outing, regards HenryG (paddywagen oji55)

HenryG,
That was me in my little red "G" along with the two brothers, no big deal -- the course was obviousley designed for Land Rovers ( WE EVEN GOT TO TOW ONE OUT )
and anyway -- where we were reared we would be cutting silage on ground near as steep -- BUT I have never had the "G" off roading before, unless one counts getting bogged up the moss = flat ground
I will now order an even larger hat.
But being less flippant, the two bros were mighty impressed by "G's" capabilities -- as Winston said when he came back to the car park and got out with a big smile on his face
" total confidence!" -- this was the man who had said only a short while before --"she will never go up that!"
