as used in Afghanistan 1st time around. Russian engineering is basic but reliable remember the story that NASA spent millions of $'s designing a biro that would write in weightless conditions, the Soviets solved this creative dilemma by using a pencil.

Thats a myth, as it'd be too dangerous to use a pencil in weightless conditions. If the point of the pencil broke it could float away and possibly get stuck in the instruments or buttons and cause serious trouble. A bit off the point but i thought i'd mention it anyway.
