Need an engine
Hello there I now need a new engine I have a 460 300GD 1989 and have been told that the engine is no longer. I am now faced with finding a new engine that has documents. which I am sure is quite hard to find. I bought it 2 years ago and for £5000 from on owner (Farmer) 155,000 miles on the clock. it is now looking like this might cost me £4000. They have already spent a lot of time finding out the problem and thinking that they might be able to find it. no Joy. so asking for your help and advice.
Kind regards
Joe
Hi Joe all is not gloom and doom!! the 300 GD engine is basically the same as in the W123 Saloon /estate so plenty of them with breakers...from GBP 300 upwards some with known history.you will need some of the "bolt on" bits from your old engine if you go that way... There is a major repairer . rebuilder/overhauler in the Midlands for these engines who will strip your old engine at a cost and quote you to rebuild it..could cost anything up to GBP 3000 but normally nearer GBP 2000..I have a W123 engine recently rebuilt still in a W123 estate and running but the estate is an MOT failure and it is automatic so would need your old engine flywheel and sump pan to be compatible.. would sell that engine sitting on a pallet ready to freight for GBP 700.as an aside what do they say is wrong with yours? as you have to try very hard to break one unless the block cracked in the frost.....
Hi Joe....
Good advice.. as always from Fixwing.. I have had a similar experience with my 85 330GD.. Engine failure finally pinned down to irrecoverable cracked head - The car ran, but like a dog..
After much rummaging round and good advice from amongst others Fixwing, I ended up getting a remanufactured engine from Crewe engines - yes in Crewe.. They supplied the 617 complete with pump/injectors etc for £1,200 - in effect you get a new engine..
But I had a surcharge (on top of the £1,200) cos the head was cracked so no option for them to remanufacture my old one - for the £1,200 they want your engine back..
They will also take your car and simply remanufacture your engine - subject to understanding what the fault is.. but taking one from them works if you want to have yours off the road for the least amount of time.
There is a much longer story/detail to my G which may be relevant to yours.. so if you want to know more... let me know..
So to sum up loads of options.. if you want to know more a phone call may be better/easier

PS I tried to get a turbo option...Crewe will remanufacture with upgrade pistons if you want to go down that option at a later date
Sorry must stop calling fixwin.. fixwing.. please forgive
I should also have said that the quote for Crewe to do the whole transplant on the assumption the old engine was suitable for re-manufacture was circa £2,200 plus VAT (engine in and supply fit remanufactured engine).
I also did the radiator and clutch at the same time - you may well want to get the same "whilst the engine is out" type of work out of the way.. I think Crewe do the water pump as well as a matter of course..
Hope this helps..

Hey,
We had a similar thing on our 280ge and found it to be the same engine in a merc estate. Bought it for about £150 got engine taken out and fitted in both cars for about £300 (5 years ago) and works perfect :)
so get looking!!! :D

One other thing..
make sure they get the right sump with the correct scavenger in it... not sure how real the risk is unless you are doing serious off road stuff.. but my understanding is the G 617 has a different sump set up to the saloons to ensure you don't get any starvation on the rough.
That said I am sure some on here have not found it to be a problem.. Fixwin will know.. I think.
