Hi,

I have a water leak finally found it after a slow leak for about 4 months! It finally went after an Icy night and when started the car it was coming out probably a pint every 2 mins!

I traced it back to behind the radiator fan but can't see whats in there!!! Is it a water pump or something if so where do I go a new one for a mercedes 280ge swb?

Is it hard to fit? I've had the radiator out before so not worried about that but all the fan belts etc is there any danger to those?

Many thanks
Joe

Yes the water pump is behind the fan. Not removed one myself but there are a few water pump threads. Apparently there are two allen key bolts at the base that require a good size key.

Would of thought that they would be badly affected by coolant, probably more of a medium/long term problem though. I was looking at the EPC the other day, I think the water pump can be serviced. Maybe they accept the old pump and give you a new one. I wouldn't go anywhere but MB for a part like that.

New pumps are not that expensive, you might as well buy a new one.

Euro car parts can supply, but rather than asking one for a G-Wagen specifically, ask for one for M110 engine. I think yours was a 280ge, according to your avtar, if I check now, I'll loose what I have typed so far. (Can not be bothered to that)

Ps, water pump leaks can be self sealing in, so far, they leak for a short period during warm up and cool down. Therefore, difficult to diagnose leaks, unless you know the signs of leaks.

Cheers,

Water Leak help please! - PART 2

Hi - suspect have same/similar issue with leak from 'pump region'. Likely to be a seal or worth just replacing pump? How straightforward, or not, is this job for part-time spanner and hammer man?
Any advice much appreciated

Re: Water Leak help please! - PART 2

A seal leak is extremely rare, most likely to be is the water pump. Leaking water pump can be difficult to locate as a leak from the pump can be self sealing. The leak has a tendency during warm up and cool down of the engine. During this small window the leak occurs and outside this window the leak will self seal.

Renewing the water pump is with the skills of a DIY mechanic, send me you email and I can send you the water pump renewal instructions.

Check for wear in the pump, holding the fan, lift UP the fan and check to see if there is play there. It is easier to take the fan belt off to check but with adequate force applied, it can be checked without removing the belts. A leak usually shows through a hole under the pump at a six O'clock position. DO the basic checks; are the hoses secure?

Re: Water Leak help please!

there are various tin plate covers on the block for the cooling system  they are held on with small bolts they rust out ,i have a 280 engine that has done just that ,it was alright until the owner topped up on antifreeze and it started coming out all over the place .
the covers are located on the side of the block give them a thorough inspection as they leak they discharge water giving the impression the leak is coming from elsewhere/sound like the antifreeze mix was weak hence the rusty water this will rot through these thin covers in time.

Re: Water Leak help please!

The one above is for an M110 engine  ( 280)...i think this is the one for the 617 ( 300d ) engine

Re: Water Leak help please!

Hi Stewart / Steve

I would say that the water pump listed is (by the picture) not the correct one

300D's GD's or whatever using the OM617 engine had various pump types fitted

The early engines had the type shown with a round boss that the bolts fasten through Part Number A115 200 18 20 or A110 200 17 20

The later engines like yours Stewart had a type with a boss that had fingers coming off that the bolts fasten through Part Number A616 200 07 20, if you look at the engine you should be able to view this.

All these are available from MB Germany in exchange form, i would have to get a price as MBUK have not sold them in a while, but i would hazard a guess around the £100+ mark.

I have in my head that the early type was used with a fixed fan and the later with a viscous type fan, but that seems to only apply to when the engine was installed in the vans and G Wagen application use a visous fan on both type of pumps, so a late 460 300GD or a late 601/602/611 207D307D/407D would all use the correct pump type.

Engines the A616 200 07 20 pump was used on....

OM615 - 970 631 series MB100 Spain
OM616 - 937 601 series 207D
OM616 - 939 601 series 207D, 602 series 307D and 611 series 407D
OM616 - 963 631 series MB100, MB120, MB140, MB160 and MB180
OM617 - 931 460 series 300GD 12 volt
OM617 - 932 460 series 300GD 24 volt and 461 series 300GD 24 volt
OM617 - 933 461 series 300GD 24 volt

Hope this helps you identify a cheaper one
