Anywhere I can get likely performance figures for each model/ engine

Just looking for max speed and basic acceleration
I want something that is at least useful (safe) on the road/ motorway so
0-60 in 12 seconds and ability to cruise on the motorway at 80 mph – sounds sufficient

Assume i should stay clear of pre 1990 cars ?

for the 12 seconds your going to be looking at g500's or late diesels, i recommend test driving them and seeing how they feel before going on the spec sheets though

Tom

p.s SpiderIV on here has a fair but unhealthy obsession with G500's so expect a lot of pushing in that direction from him

12 seconds or thereabouts is enough
had a old landy that was so slow on the road it was dangerous
wife xc90 was spot on 2.5d 185 bhp

also had serveral sports cars that were also dangerous but due to much speed rather than not enough

Re: performance figures for each model/ engine

the figure for a ge300 manual is 13 secs to 62mph the best an earlier 280ge can do is 15.6 seconds. Deleting the cat and fitting a k&n filter should release about 10% more power to a modest catalysed output of only 170bhp, but only for the pre- 1992 cars? Not absolutely sure on the dates it may be 1993 when they became compulsory? Even so the g-wagen without a V8 or some other engine modification, is never going to be a quick car and even the high performance ones are compromised by the cars suspension, its ride height, its weight and aerodynamics.

Sorry but I don't know what you mean with that (no pun intended!)

My G does 0-100 Km/h in 23 secs and yet most other cars I see on the road I end up overtaking them... so people are actually driving fast cars never to use them for that purpose.

Mate, you got to stop kidding yourself, driving passed parked cars is not strictly overtaking.

Oh, but I do beg to differ Old Bean!

Vroom - Go 500. It will get to 60 well before 12 seconds and will sit very happily at 80 and the fuel consumption is not bad at around 60 - you can actually get about 18MPG!!!! :P (which is not bad for a brick weighing in at 2.6t)

But the best thing about the 500 is the amount of tree huggers you know you are annoying - its great!

I guess a G320 or a 300GE would be quite sufficient for overtaking and fun driving...

I agree....280 probably a bit too slow, mine sits at 70 happily but doesn't like being pushed much harder, it doesn't feel that slow on the uptake though....300GE would be quick enough, especially if SWB and manual....G500/420 obviously quicker still but are going to triple your budget at least...pay your money, take your choice.

G300 petrol and LPG no problems, but if you want the cream then G500 for sure
