Right here is the scenario.

I took my car in for a service/MOT - I used the SatNav to get there
I decided to spend the £278 to get the latest disks, after 1st checking they were compatible - they were, according to MB
I then asked if they could install the disks - they forgot, and said it was a simple case of putting in the new disk and following instructions
I did and the system could not see any satellites
I asked them to check and they said I need a new Sat Nav Ariel at £365!

What I would like to have some advice on.

Do these things break easily?
Is it a case of a plug may have been moved/unplugged while servicing has been going on?
Do you think MB are extracting the urine?

I do need the SatNav as the Mrs uses it a lot and as I found out last week she got lost and I had to pop out and physically go and get her!

Cheers

Re: SatNav

Given the sequence of events that sounds complete junk

More like some sort of software configuration type issue. I.E. it was looking at com port 1 and now it’s looking at 3. Or it’s looking for a type 2 receiver when it’s got a type 1 installed.

Note. I have absolutely no knowledge of MB sat navs

Sounds like they're taking the wotsit. Bottom line is: They said "it's a simple case of putting in the new disc and following instructions". You did that and it doesn't work. So at the very least you should be able to get them to put it back how it was. Might be cheaper to invest in some kind of wife-tracker!

Re: SatNav

Hi Had similar experience with Fiat satnav in our camper..took it to Fiat Main dealer after they ordered updates and Europe disc from Fiat Italy...we insisted that they load the data....they inserted disc but could not retrieve it after download...all sorts of excuses including new antenna involving lots of money..finally resolved after heated conversation.. with satnav unit being removed and returned to Fiat Italy on exchange basis. (4weeks) duly installed by main dealer with all the correct mapping.they then presented an invoice for GBP 800 for the exchange unit which we refused to pay...three months of "account outstanding" statements ended 14 months ago and we have been back for a service since with no reference to "accounts outstanding"
this of no use to you as I understand your situation.. because you loaded the disc on their instructions..which they may well deny when you try to seek redress....*****It can take up to thirty minutes for the satnav to reprogram and this must be done in a open area where it can see most of the satellites.it will not program on the move ..so if you have an active screen but no satellites go to a wide open space "satnav off" park up turn it on and wait ..with luck 5 minutes and it all done....30 at the most ....

What a hassle, may I suggest you check the antenna on the roof and wiring, as follows:
Open sunroof fully
Stand on seats to have a look at condition of antenna.
With a big flat blade screwdriver, remove interior light/sunroof switch (by inserting the tool at left or right side, can't remember, but certainly not at the front), then look at the base of the antenna and check if the wiring is all solid.
The other end of the wiring (At the radio) is easy to check, if you have the right tools to remove the radio. An MB technician or someone with the knowhow can do it in seconds.

Ps. if the antenna has starting deteriorating you can get a cheap cap to cover it, part number A202 827 0031.

Last time I checked the price for a while antenna, it was very dear...

Re: SatNav

I am fairly certain that the sat nav receiver is in the right front headlight surround. The one on the roof is for the telephone.

Satnav antenae are dirt cheap if you don't get an MB one. But personally I would ensure that it is connected to the back of the headunit...

thanks for this - I basically reloaded the disk in an open space and left to stand for about 40 mins - still no luck!

Am writing a stern note to MB to find out why it was working in the morning when I was going to see them, and why it does not work now!

Grrrrrrrr

Re: SatNav

It’s a coincidence beyond the realms of reality that the receiver has failed at the very same time of swapping disc’s.

It’ll be a software glitch. Have you reinstalled the old maps?

Spider listen to the man :D only antennas I saw/removed from Gs were on non-APS versions, so that small antenna on the roof might not be related..
