Hi All , need advise please , 280ge 1989 5sp manual , change down gears seems no problem if 5th gear isnt used by driving up to 4th , but if i use 5th , more than not it wont allow me to select lower gears , but if i stop and go from 5th to reverse leaving engine running it will go into reverse then i can select 4th , 3rd and second , spoke to my local merc agent for selector bushes and didnt know what i was talking about , could it be anything else ? , ps clutch is ok , not slipping or any judder , regards stevo

Re: gear selector problem

Probably best to check for play in the link rods yourself - even half a millimeter of slack could cause a problem. The bushes themselves are only a few pounds so might be worth changing anyhow.
Gearbox bushing A0009920510

Shift lever bushing A1159920110

you will need 3 of each.

ps. take care not to use anything sharp when fitting so as not to damage the new rubber.

Re: gear selector problem

Sound similar to the problem I had a couple of weeks ago when mine got stuck in 1st gear.
As some suggested, it turned out to be the linkage rod having gone over-centre - in my case, assisted by a tree branch that got pushed up between gearbox and chassis/floor.

My fix was to get underneath and just push the linkage back in place. It works OK for now but I have to replace the bushes yet.
