If any one is interested I do quite a few trips over Salisbury Plain.

We offer 4x4 groups a discounted price at our Hotel along with free guiding over Salisbury Plain and some lanes around the Plain. You decide how long 1-2 days or longer if you so wish.

The last trip I did was for a Jeep Club in Oct. Saturday was over the Plain and Sunday at the off road site Muddy Bottom here in the New Forest.

If any one is interested let me know, weekends are best due to the Military using the plain during the week.

Dont mind taking 1 vehicle or 15. If you dont want to spend overnight Im happy to guide you for a day.

Re: Salisbury Plain

As some of you will recall, we had a good drive around Salisbury Plain in December 2008 following the TOR published route. A couple of us also went out for the day in March.

I certainly would not question Steve's motivation, but I have driven many times around the plain and if members are interested, I am happy to plot a route and act as guide at no cost.

Re: Salisbury Plain

Andrew next time you are down pm me and we can perhaps get together and do a trip over the Plain.
I assume that you dont have a green card which allows access all over the Plain not just the Byways.

No charge was my message for guiding but a cost if people wanted to stay at the Hotel I thought that was quite plain. I know lots of groups want to make a weekend of it so my offer was of discounted room rates along with perhaps a trip to Muddy Bottoms which I am a member of.

Re: Salisbury Plain

Thanks guys Muddy Bottom is OK small site some extreme tracks if you want, its in 3 sections 2 wooded parts and an open plain not as good as Tong but OK.

I have also been driving some of the lanes above Salisbury Plain which I have added to memory map so I think I have about 3 days plus of lanes there so far. I normally get out at least once a month.

Yes let me know if you want to come down and play. I some times go over during the week onto the Plain and outskirts. If one areas closed off then you just drive over to another section of the plain. Some bad bits during the winter when its wet.

Re: Salisbury Plain

There's never enough off roading trips but most of us camp. I would suggest a date in the new year and see what response you get from members, I would suggest feb/ mar onwards

Re: Salisbury Plain

JMorris (and Steve)
Certainly not my intention to discourage any members and abject apologies if any offence was caused.
Salisbury Plain offers great driving opportunities for even a standard road-biased 4x4 and you should not damage any bodywork unless you are totally silly, but mud and water can do odd things to vehicles not used to it :)

I take part in AWDC trials but would welcome another chance to drive around with other Gs and am happy to sort out a choice of routes (with suitable luch-time stops if wanted)

Re: Salisbury Plain

Andrew as your keen to organise this trip please go ahead.

If you give us all a date (I would suggest a Sat ) but dont mind.
It might be a good idea to do it over the new year holiday perhaps.

If you need any help let me know as I have most of the routes. I will look forward to this.

Guys Im off to the Plain this Sat for the day if any one would like to tag along let me know. I normally get over there about 10am and finish around 4pm

Re: Salisbury Plain

Suspect New Year might be too soon after the wales trip for some and too busy for others. As PP suggested, Feb/March might be a better option.

Re: Salisbury Plain

There is a navigation drive organised by somebody else on Sunday 27th December starting from The Bustard Inn (2 miles NW from Stonehenge). I have done several of these before and they are well attended but mostly vehicles built in Solihull.

We could tag along with that, or meet up somewhere else and have our own drive around? I have several routes worked out and have off-road sat-nav using Memory Map.

As an alternative, the All Wheel Drive Club has a drive-round at Bordon on the Sunday, and I am trying to find out if there are any special deals on that.

Any interest ??

Re: Salisbury Plain

You have to be a member of the awdc to do the driver round, membership £25 plus drive round £25 makes it an expensive dayout

Re: Salisbury Plain

I went out yesterday over the Byways around Malborough and south towards Salisbury plain found 3 new Byways that are quite good.

Around Malborough most of the lanes are closed from Oct through to April

Andrew why do we want to tag along on the back of another group lets get this for the GW club members.

Just let me know Im free most of the time Sat are best over the Plain Sundays more vehicles are out playing so the Wardens and MOD are about a bit more.

The Army have basically now closed their activities on the Plain till next year.

Re: Salisbury Plain

It looks like this is coming together.

What day do we want to drive? Sunday 27th / Monday 28th

How many interested, roughly where from ? So I can optimise start/finish.

Total Off Road magazine this month features several lanes in NW Hampshire that I am familiar with but they are some distance from the plain. What do other folks want?

Re: Salisbury Plain 28 December drive

One of the service areas at Amesbury (Solstice or Countess) is a good place, or Stonehenge. That way we can fuel up and use the facilities before we start - or do you have an alternative suggestion?

I have the route that the navigation excercise is taking, so will try to devise a trail for us that avoids them if possible, even if we travel the same tracks but at different times.

Do you want to stop at a suitable hostelry for lunch, or sarnies and coffee where we choose on the day?

Any ideas how we publicise this to get more people along?

Re: Salisbury Plain

Might be interested in coming along to this (I've got the bug!), but it will depend on the shopping situation. I need to hit the sales on Sat so it depends on how much the mrs can buy in one day.

I'll keep an eye on the thread and let you know.

Good to hear there is so much interest. I had to drive to Finchley tonight to get some wheels for my son's car, but will finish the route Wednesday and post details.

Question - would you want to include the German Village :?: or stay further north and east ?

Re: Salisbury Plain

I have a route which takes in a good combination of grass and hard tracks, with just the right amount of water and mud included for a fun day.

Can we please meet at Solstice service area, on the A303 one mile east of Amesbury 09:45 Sunday 27th so we can get started by about 10. There is a Holiday Inn hotel, and filling station with convenience store & coffee.

We will finish up at Stonehenge, which is 3 miles down the A303 but the planned route to get there is 36 miles and will take us about 4-5 hours 8)

I have to head off to work now, but I will post route plan, pdf map and Memory Map file here this afternoon.

Merry Christmas

Re: Salisbury Plain

:!: Here are the route details (hopefully if I can attach the right files)

You should be able to see a route card with a small scale map as an html file and also a Memory Map route file which you can import to MM if you have it (my PC runs up to date anti-virus software, but the usual disclaimers apply).

Mmmmm :( Not sure if that worked.

If you want details before Sunday pm or email andrew@griffin.org and I will send them. I will print out several sheets and bring them along.

Happy Christmas to you all

Re: Salisbury Plain

Soltice services area is on A303 1 mile east of Amesbury town centre and the crossing of the A345 at Countess services.

There is a big Holiday Inn hotel, garage, fast-food outlets etc on the south side of the road and access on and off the A303 from both direstions.

Pictures :)

I have posted the good ones that I took into a gallery on the forum.
However, to get them on I had to reduce the file size way down. If you want the original full size version from my camera, let me know and i will send it by email (they are about 800kb each) but reduced to less than 50kb on the site.

Glad to hear that everybody had fun and got home safely.
