The missus wants one.

Time to buy another G, some canvas and a Stihl saw?

Saw it here

I'd question its practicality, but hey - who cares it's awesome!

Re: LWB cabriolet

I agree - it would be better if the door tops had been finished with another material (GRP, Carbon Fibre?) but I love the concept of it.

If the roof was decent it would be a great summer car.

Re: LWB cabriolet

No info on the builders unfortunately, the logo on the numberplate isn't clear.

I think it was converted in Japan.

But, like you - I would really love one.

Maybe the door cappings and the roll bars need more thought (would like to see something more suited to the G lines and higher to match the original roofline, maybe with a folding hoop and clip on braces between to mount a 'bikini' roof.

Don't suppose the hood is powered - looks like a manual job.
Serious dosh I bet.

Re: LWB cabriolet

I am sorry but that is ugly and extremely fat fingered in the design execution.

The doors should be finished off rather than hacked off and covered with wood. And what's with the hinge on that fold down windshield?!?!? They could of just used the hinges from the fold down windshield from the military Gs - a lot tidier looking.... and probably cheaper and easier to fit...

There was another LWB cabriolet someone had posted earlier which was basically just a regular two door cabriolet design but extended to four doors which while still not to my liking was at least better executed.

Heck they should of just taken the design cue from the factory produced LWB cabriolets like TwoDogs had...

Re: LWB cabriolet

Exactly Maxwell!

Sort the door tops, proper military screen and a nice fitting (fold away in a bag style) roof would do it for me.

If I get rid of a couple of VW's I might attempt building one for the wife.

Would there be much requirement for body stiffening?

Any pics of the factory LWB cabs?

Hmmm difficult one, the G chassis is quite tough on its own, although I would have though so as most cab's have to have a strengthened chassis in some way, also if you had the 55 Engine the power alone could start twisting the chassis, eh?

Spider1V - Yes i would still have one, even LHD!

G's aren't a unibody construction, so wouldn't think so. Hopefully the roll bars are attached to something more beefy then an ashtray.

Re: LWB cabriolet

Not sure I like any of those TBH.

Only the 2nd (military?) one works for me.

The LWB black one looks too much like a 1920's tourer for my liking even though its probably the best finished of the lot.

The thing I like about the original posted G was the fact its cut off at the door pillars, adding to the open air experience. Most of these are compromises and show it - at least that one has the right spirit (if not the quality of execution).

Re: LWB cabriolet

Just had a quick (very quick) play with it in Photoshop to get a feel for it.

Doors properly trimmed, screen fixed (right height, stupid hinge arrangement binned), rollbars lifted and bikini roof fitted.

As its a play vehicle really I have gone with a sports style roof (only 2 roll hoops) but you could add an extra one for the full tilt look.

Re: LWB cabriolet

Fair enough - they are all pretty horrendous... but I would say the Falcon Hunting G for the Sheikh (gold one of course) and the Pope Mobile are pretty open. The Pope Mobile is in fact actually the same body as the Norwegian Military one.... they just beefed up the rollbar a bit to stick on the papal seal or whatever that symbol is.

I think the black roll bars on the original posting just look a bit to Cheep Wrangler to me....

Re: LWB cabriolet

Needs 'designed' roll hoops in flatter profile to complement the G sides IMO

Here is a better version I did on a Brabus:

Spill!!!!!

My wife is giving up her beloved Golf Mk1 cabriolet (and maybe her classic Beetle cabriolet too) as she can't manage to drive them without power steering. She has also stolen my estate car for taking the dogs out.

I'd love to give her something with PAS, that is practical and a cabrio too!

You could go for the G3A - no Hitler, third Reich or Nazi links whatsoever! But do see where you coming from!

Those photos look like they are from Saudi. They tend to like cars designed for hunting over there. I remember once seeing a similar Range Rover in Saudi built for the King. Awesome looking car.

Mmmm...very Ford Model A indeed.

Bit basic for the missus though unless it has PAS, Bluetooth, heated seats and lots of mirrors.

One of 4 (or 9) factory prototype LWB, 5 door Cabrios. This one is in the Puch Museum in Austria:

This one was for sale earlier this year in Germany:

Re: LWB cabriolet

now that would be telling!!
some of the details, to start with the roll bars would have to be rolled box section, tube would just look cheap and nasty!
it would need custom made door glass larger, to get rid of the door tops, then it would have to have electric windows, with micro switches on the door releses to drop the windows 10mm to open the doors and to return when the doors close to seal, every thing else is very straight forward, wolf front window frame with hinges, any decent auto trimmer could make the hood.
Im thinking satin olive green with a black mohair hood....if only I lived in l.a!

Re: LWB cabriolet

Think you have the right idea there.

I see the roll bars as a plated section built around double box sections. Nice, strong and tidy plus you can build shape into them for window seals/shuts etc.
