The fasten seatbelt warning light above the rearview mirror on my 1993 300 GEL has developed an annoying fault. It flashes continualy which is a distraction at night but it also continues to flash even when the ignition is switched off and the key removed.

I can not work out where the connection is that prompts the light to activate and then tells it to switch off. Could someone please tell me how it operates and where I should be looking so I can fix it. Thanks.

Hi Fixwin, in response to your question I went to check them. The interior light was in the off position but when switched to work in conjunction with the doors opening it randomly switched on and off whether the doors were open or not. The drivers door appears to operate the light and delay correctly when opened and closed but the other doors have no effect.

I take it I also have a problem with the interior light as well as the seatbelt light. Could the problem be with the connections on the door frames ?

Re: Fasten seatbelt light

Hi each door including the rear door has a frame mounted switch that goes to ground/earth through the doorframe... the switch centre has a brass ferrule on the end and this slides between two brass fingers as you push it in and out...the switches can be removed very easily BUT make sure that if you disconnect the wires you make sure they cannot fall back into the door frame or you will be fishing for a week to get them back...clean all the brass parts and the hole that the switch fits into. re-connect and push back into the hole then simulate the door shutting with your finger...the delay should work on each door...when all are back in action the spurious ground/earth that may have been illuminating the seatbelt sign could well have gone and the sign then works as it should....

Hi thanks for that. A large sunday roast and a few glasses of Scotlands finest have disuaded me from going into the garage tonight but will check it out tomorrow and let you know the outcome.

Hi Fixwin,
Took out the buttons on the door frames and gave them a good clean up. Also gave the door frame earthing points a rub down. Everything now working perfectly, thanks again for the advice.
